Auto Start Stop
My production date starts in three weeks and I was reading through the Manual just posted. I noted that the 2020 M2 Competition has "Auto Start Stop" function. Is this for real? Can it be defeated? How do you all deal with it?
(FYI - my build is AW, Black w/blue, MT, Black High Gloss Trim, Bi-Color wheels, NO options) Last edited by 5150d; 04-29-2019 at 04:34 PM.. |

There's a button to disable it above the ignition switch. It is saved for every start so you can set and forget

It's not an issue. Push button once when you pick up car at dealership.
After 3200 miles I finally turned it on to see how it worked with a manual a couple days ago. |

if that's true, I'm keep it on until it gets annoying. the car gets shit gas mileage.
I saw a research study on the feature and it came to the conclusion that if a car is stopped for more than 7-10 seconds, you start saving fuel. that was on a 4 cyl, so probably even more so on this thirsty bitch. |

The 2018 has it as well (assuming it's on all M2s)
Never used it. Turned it off and forgot about it. |

I left this feature on with my MT F80 M3, and became used to it. My only concern for my incoming M2C, which I plan to keep long-term, is wear on the starter and engine in term of frequent start-ups. I was always taught that starting the car (of course with cold oil) is overall a big wear factor on car engines. I guess that is an unknown for the time being.

I use it. My 2018 GTI doesn’t have it and I wish it did.
In the M2 it takes some coordination as the car needs to be in neutral to work. Is play a fun game of coordinating everything to the traffic flow to be as seemless and smooth as possible. |

I accidentally turned it on one time and thought something was wrong when I stopped at an intersection and my car shut off causing me to push to start. I don't care for this feature especially with a manual transmission but it's probably fine for your average commuter car especially with an NA engine. I don't like it with a turbocharged engine as you can be doing a hard full throttle run where the turbo is spinning really fast only for the engine to shut off if you come to an immediate stop while the turbocharger is at a higher than desirable RPM to cut off oil supply. BMW puts the feature in these cars because they are obligated to do so but it seems like they don't really expect you to use it as by default it's always off.

In Australia it turns itself on again every time you start the car.
However, it only functions if you are in efficient mode and automatic. Unless I am in heavy stop start traffic or feeling lobotomised I never use automatic. So overall, I’m ok with this. |

Is it new in US? There's a on off button. But in EU it always turns back on every start even if you push the off button. It might be good for test mileage but it's not good for an engine. I used bimmercode to set default to off permanently. If I'm in really bad traffic with long stops like a minute or more i might turn it on. |

I'm in a minority here i really like ASD, tried coding it off and the car sounds pretty poor without it, IMHO.

I coded this 5m outside of the dealer when i got my car my engine never ever turned itself off in its life so far.
might be that modern engines and parts are "designed" for this feature, but I think it won't do good to your engine. Especially if you want to have that car for a long time... EU models always revert this back to default, so auto/start stop "on". You can code it to either remember the last setting (like us cars) or just be disabled by default on startup

Also in Italy. I'm not using auto start&stop, i'm afraid that the engine starter could have an issue after a while.
