The idrive warning should be in Headunit under warnings. "Warning at start-up". Just go through every single ECU till you find what you want. It should all be there. If it they aren't then it's possible that your car is too new (G series?) and those features haven't been added yet. |

Questions for Bimmercode users
I just got my break in service performed on Saturday. I asked the "genius" if he could change any of the settings in the car. Without hesitation he said absolutely not. Followed by "Changing anything other than what the iDrive system allows, will void your warranty."
Firstly... Fuck that dude. But anyway, a few questions before I buy it... 1) Since I have a locked ECU, will that prevent me from using Bimmercode? I assume they are totally different, but it doesn't hurt to ask. 2) Can you save multiple backups / profiles in Bimmercode? I know you can backup the current profile. But I would like to have multiples to play around with settings. 3) Is there a repository somewhere that lists all of the expert / advanced codings and what they are mapped to? 4) Is there an OBD-II adapter that works better than any other? Android user, so it would be nice to be able to do it via my phone. Last edited by msdss; 08-13-2019 at 12:09 PM.. |

I've coded some simple stuff with Bimmercode: disable seatbelt chime, fold in mirrors, etc. I have not played around with expert mode and don't really want/need to.
To the best of my knowledge, yes, it backs up your last profile before coding so it can be restored. Not sure how any of these features would "void" warranty, especially the powertrain. Typical dealer employee talk. I bought this adapter, works wonderfully and its BT: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 |

This one seems pretty complete but I'm sure there are more updated one's as well: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1020138 Quote:
It's recommended you use bluetooth over wifi. Other than that it shouldn't really matter. Just don't cheap out and get a super crappy one and you should be fine. |

Real talk, I taught my Genius how to play DVDs in through the iDrive.. And how "LSD" wasn't just a hallucinogen he tried in college. Their skill set doesn't past what they learned in a BMW training/marketing video. They're always going to err on the side on of safety 'cause they don't know any better. Anyways, actual "coding" is writing and programming of new CAFD files in BMW modules. But "coding" in the Bimmercode sense is a misnomer. It's really just activation and disablement of certain features, by changing the values, within the already existing CAFD files. There is nothing nefarious about it, other than the fact than some features are disabled by region, probably due to some archaic regulation. I have Bimmercode and ISTA+ and from my experience, "coding" doesn't leave any trail in the module, other than the intended change. Also, when ISTA is used by the dealer for changes, the log is saved in a BMW cloud-based databank and not within the ECU. Bimmercode or an illegal copy of ISTA, neither is connected to a server, so no footprint. TL : DR As long as you have a rough idea of what TF you're doing, coding is safe. |

BMW geniuses are mostly just like Apple geniuses. If they were actually any good they wouldn’t be working entry level helpdesk / customer support stuff. Might be some exceptions, of course.
Poochie is spot on here; it’s just editing configuration files of options BMW feels comfortable enough to expose. |

Any modification can void your warranty, especially if you have something fail related to it. The question is will they and that is probably something done on a case by case basis.

Thanks for the info everyone.
Looking forward to getting my god damn folding mirror options like it should have had from the factory and getting rid of that god forsaken speaker engine noise. |

When I got my car they insisted on setting up a Genius session even though I repeatedly said I don't need it. In the end I figured out you guys need to do them to meet some quotas. So I literally told the Genius guy, "Hey dude, I don't need any help. I know BMW's inside out. What do you need me to sign so you get your cred and I can go home."

Nice people, but my goodness they are TERRIBLE with technology. They'll buy a maxed out 7 series and I have to explain for about 5 minutes how comfort access works for them to understand it. Let alone talking about profiles or using gracenote online to obtain album info for downloaded CDs I usually can only just get into the basics of navigation before I see steam coming from their heads. lol |

You can blame the Owner's Manual for most of the confusion. It's translated from German and then rewritten to just barely make sense in English. Plenty of times that I have to reread something to understand wth it means. Not only is it over 300+ pages long, but there's a separate manual for iDrive! No wonder why everyone's so confused and irritated. Can you imagine being retired and trying to figure out a 7-series? |
