So what is this record then actually? Everyone else who wants to break this "record" has to follow their M-shaped track? I can pop 1000 balloons in 60s with a laser mounted on my 320D when they are lined up in a straight. And above all, why would we care?!

Lame ad. They should've done a hill climb or Ghymkana kinda thing about a race cars that breaks free of the circuit or just add Clive Owen and make another film for bmwfilms.com.

That was a very pointless ad and a very pointless and 'fake' record. It was a lazy record that could easily be beaten. At least do something that is impressive and genuine.

Love what the marketing guys must have been talking about... marketing director - 'guys, we can't set a record in 0-60, lateral g force, lap times or anything related to cars, what can we do?'... 'I know!' Replied Tim 'pop some balloons!'... 'YES!' Cheered everyone in the room.
