Excessive Oil On Under shield?

I was wondering how common this excessive oil collection on the under shield of our cars? My friend has a 335i with the same amount of oil collected, also in our inter-coolers when we switched.

I was putting his old ER FMIC on today and installing a oil drain valve and noticed all this damn oil everywhere.... I know I have a dry rot seal on the bottom drain of my oil catch can, but I highly doubt that it dumps this much oil.

That doesn't look normal. Your oil pan also has a lot of residue around it and substantial discoloration. Do you have to top-off your oil frequently?

Looks like its from your rear crankshaft seal. See that serial number stamping... there is lots of oil around those e-torx bolts. And the rear crankshaft seal has been known to leak and cause weird fluttering(cricket) noises.

I normally have to add a quart between oil changes.

That noise your talking about, would that occur when you turn the car off? I posted a video a long time ago about a strange noise and never figured out what it was...

Having to add a quart between BMW's long oil change intervals is normal.

What is not normal is the amount of oil under your car(and your buddies). You obviously have a leak. Take it into your dealer.

I can hear a couple of noises(three or four) in your video...

That noise as you shut off the engine is your dual mass flywheel, as the rpms come to a stop. Your car is a manual right>? I normally just press down the clutch as I switch off the motor - to avoid that noise. But its not harming anything.

Then you have that "other: noise just before the engine stops(the noise when your headlights go off)... kind of sounds like your clutch release bearing.... but you were not inside the car on the clutch? Not sure what that very last noise is. ???
