Is power limited until 1200 Mike service?
Loving my new M3 and the interior with full leather is better than I could have imagined.
However, as I watch the vehicle status for torque and HP, no matter what I do when applying throttle, it does not budge past 240 torque. Granted, I am not pushing past 5500 rpm, but I would have thought it would feel more starting at 1750rpm. Car has plenty of overtaking power but wondering if it is limited until first oil change. I know sounds crazy but the numbers don't lie

That seems very odd. I still haven't had my first service and I have had the torque display well over 300. I highly doubt power is limited during break-in as I know of people who have tracked their F8X's almost straight from the dealership.

Are you in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear and just punching it? Traction control could be a factor. Try 3rd or 4th on a safe highway when cruising at 45 plus.
Search the forum there are a lot of topics on this thread and most of them point to it being an urban legend.

From everything I've read, BMW Service Mgr said, etc. etc... only thing that they "turn on" at the 1200 is the ability to use Launch Control. That's it. Fact of Fiction? It's about as much as a mystery as how BMW decides which orders go into production!!
There are dozens of threads on the same topic.

I just got mine this week. I know pretty much nothing about cars other than the fact that I LOVE the M4. hahaha but a buddy of mine drove it last night and he's driven just about everything. he said he felt like the car was giving him about 20% of what it should be..... what the heck? I mean I feel like it's fast, but it's not nearly as FAST as I thought it was going to be. could this be because I haven't broken it in and done the service yet? or should I take it in to see if something's up? it doesn't feel any different than any 3 series I've driven honestly. and I feel like it should feel way different.

Wait until the break in is done, and do a pull past 5500 RPM, with MDM on, and throttle in Sport +. Come back here and tell us again how it feels like any other 3 series.

It's a myth, power is the same, just LC will be enabled after 1200 service. That video is an M3 fresh of the delivery truck Seems like it has all its power to me |

Power is not limited before break in.
The amount of torque/power the engine produces depends on engine speed AND the resistance to increasing engine RPM's. If you are in neutral and redline the engine it produces very little power because it doesn't require 400/400 to turn the engine parts and driveshaft. Same with 1st gear. You are using gear ratio to help propel the car. You only get max power output from engine at wide open throttle and in ~4/5/6/7 gear. |

Do you think BMW limits their test of your car before you take possession? Um no they don't. I don't think you should be banging off the hard limiter, but keeping it under 5500 rpms is ridiculous IMO.
There is no way my car is limited in power(I haven't done the break in service yet). If I am being limited, then this thing will be absolutely shocking after, which I know is impossible. Take off the traction control, hit it in second gear. You'll see then. |

Didn't experience any limitation in power prior to break in, i did however give myself the impression that it was stronger after but that was just based on the fact that I was babying it prior to 1200. I was pretty much deceiving my mind to think is limited when it wasn't.

I was also curious about this. My SA said wait till after 1200 service, you get 100 more HP. I suppose he was referring to launch control? He also said that there isn't anything you can do to hurt the car during the break in period, lead me to believe that it was restricted intentionally. I guess it was my own naivety. I do agree that lower gears are a little underwhelming. All the power is in 3rd+.

I cant believe SA's still try to pull this off lol...
I wonder if they really believe that the car is underpowered or they're just trained to lie out of their teeth

LOL, seriously. I've heard it before as well. Maybe they just don't want you to push the car in its first 1000 miles. I redlined mine the first day I got it. Finished out 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I know what MPH 3rd gear ends at after the first night of ownership. I beat the hell out of all my new cars and have NEVER had an issue with engine failures.
