G series rear view mirror DIY - fantastic upgrade

Thank you to Matt Devo (wont let me tag him) for his post that inspired this video!

Hope everyone is having a great week, and I wanted to share my latest DIY!
If you haven't seen it yet, the new rear view mirror in the latest BMW G series models really is a dramatic improvement. It is wider, has an almost borderless design and is much thinner. To top it off, the homelink buttons are redesigned along with the LED dome (now gone) you see on the older mirrors!

Its a HUGE improvement both visually and functionally, and I knew I had to make the change! The mirrors new are rather pricey, but if you look around especially on Ebay or from wrecked models, you can find one much cheaper like I did.

The change is non destructive, so you could always change back if you leased your car, or wanted it back off, and really isn't hard to do.

All of the details are in the video, and this an easy change for HUGE benefit, especially in a car like the M2C with a really small mirror.

Yeah.. it is much smaller than the newer mirrors, and I think a better shape as well. Also the mirror in my M2C is really thick, and has a thick frame around it as well.

So when I saw the mirrors in the latest F's and the new Gs, and then the guide posted by another member here, I had to do it!

I'm not opposed to this mod however how is there a HUGE benefit? The rear window is still the same size and the stock mirror works perfectly. I would consider the benefit to be purely aesthetic. This F/G newer mirror is in our X3 and I don't see that big of a difference other than aesthetics.

I have been out of my geometry classes long enough to not take a stab at math of surface area. lol. The G mirror though has more surface area, is a better shape and fills the view space better than the stock M2 mirror.

Also the G mirror has a much smaller frame edge and is thinner in the body than the original.

You are correct it looks better for sure, but also has better function imo as well. I see headset edge to edge now and the entire rear glass, where I didn't before at all. Larger mirror glass, better shape.

As a laugh I showed the conversion to the GM of my local BMW dealership yesterday, who now is likely to do the same to his new M2 CS.

I would like to see before and after photos, and a side by side of the two.
I can see the entire back window now, but I would make the switch if the bottom edge would be raised up.

Thinking of radar and GoPro placement.

just ran out and took some quick shots.. new mirror, old mirror, side by side, thickness etc.

The most telling is reversing the old to match the same orientation as the new, then overlapping. you can see the new is wider (on both sides) plus has the thinner frame on the glass itself.

So on the new you get a reversed shape, wider and taller glass, smaller frame and significantly thinner.

Forgive quick phone shots.

I've had the thin bezel mirrors on my previous cars, so I'm aware of the clean look.
The M mirror, however, has a reversed shape ( \____/ ) that I think makes it unique.
If there was a thin bezel mirror with the same shape, I'd switch it out.
But for now, I prefer the stock one.

Thanks for sharing the info though!

Hi,
My OG M2 does not have Homelink
Could I use this trick to install a G series mirror with Homelink ?
Seems that all the electronics of the Homelink are in the mirror but what about the wiring ???

only one way to know, remove the cover and check the wiring for your existing mirror.

Would you happen to have the part number for the specific mirror, or at least the specific G-Series it came off of?

I did a quick part search on The 'Bay and it was head explody time.

TIA-

not quite that simple.. needs to match options on your car.

If you check the video description, I have a detailed walkthrough of how to figure out the right mirror.

Thanks-- non-videoable wifi at the hotel tonight so I wasn't able to watch.

I have a bit of an issue on uphill right hand turns because the stock mirror is right in my line of sight. It can only be adjusted so much to accommodate this. I have two questions.

1)How did changing up the mirror affect front right visibility?
2)It looked like you had greater range of motion with regards to adjustability, is that the case?

Hmmm... cant say I have noticed any issues with visibility really, so can't say if its any better or worse. Just not something I have noticed.

It MIGHT be a little more adjustable, maybe the socket is allows slightly more, but also didn't stand out to me.

Yeah, sorry, two 'I am not sure' answers.. other than this mirror is wildly better than the oval original. Love it every day.

Thanks for the answers! I am not particularly tall but I sit tall and its definitely a source of consternation.

followed this post and video and stumbled across what i think is another option for these mirrors on the used market.

my car is a 19 M2C and the vin comes out with four options related to the mirror, they are:

S319=YES
S5AC=YES
S5AS=YES
S8TH=YES

The part number Stephen used is different than the one I am going to try....

Stephen: 51169476753 from the G20
Ryan: 51169459440 from the G30, F90 M5, G31, G32, G11, G12

picked mine up used on ebay as well for $165 shipped

will post up the differences when I get it in to help compare.

for me, its mostly a cosmetic mod to eliminate the blinking dome!

well done! The blizzard of options and part numbers on that mirror doesn't make it easy for sure. I took what I thought was the right one and rolled the dice.. seemed to work out, but even then there might be better options. 8)
