Loud tires ?
Hey everyone and happy new year. My dilemma is I’ve had the M2 for a little while now and while driving the tires seem to be so damn loud. Like a loud humming and it only gets louder the faster you go. The tires are new , currently on Pirelli Pzeros. Is it the pirellis or something serious? Car has 30k and thank you in advance any help is greatly appreciated 🙌🙌🙌

If they’re run-flat tires, that’s unfortunately normal – they have really stiff sidewalls.
If they’re not run-flats, than it may just be the lack of sound dampening on the M2… I find it pretty loud in general, and gets tiring after a while on the highway, but I enjoy it. |

Off-Topic... EnzoTuned 335d? More reading for me! The 335d is a great car :-) Piggy-back tune working great! Knock on wood, the car has been nothing short of amazing. |

The tire roar is fatiguing no doubt. Even with the sound deadening added back in its bad.

I sold the 335d after getting the M2. It was tuned by Enzo (great guy and tuner). Car ran reliably for 60k miles after the tune (also had a JBD). Loved that car! |

If the tires are in good shape, you may want to have a tech check the bearings. |

I mean, if you're adding sound deadening to the M2 you bought the wrong car. Most guys are leaving the back seats down and doing exhaust modifications to make it louder.

The whirring noise made by my blizzaks on dry pavement is really something to behold

I understand the exhaust, I mean thats one of many reasons we love these cars . This is my third M car and I’ve never heard tires so loud. Just seeing if anyone agrees or had experience with the pirellis or maybe it’s just me idk 🤷‍♂️😂

For a modest investment, you might try adding these two sets of dampening: 1. Cover for side section (#6 below) - quiets tire noise from the rear https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...02#41007294289 2. Sound insulation, door (#14 below) - quiets tire noise from the front https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...08#51487319479 A long thread discusses sound deadening, and tire noise is mentioned. https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...ighlight=tires Recommended. |

In the end, at least with the tires on my M2, tire roar is pretty bad on rough surfaces at freeway speeds and otherwise acceptable. Fortunately, most of the freeway surfaces around me are fairly smooth (with the occasional rough section here and there that I just endure). |

This topic also makes me think of a couple of videos from BMW DIY Guy about adding sound deadening. These steps, while possibly more in depth than many of the steps recommended in the thread referenced above, likely bring about more reliable and repeatable sound level reduction: https://youtu.be/c5lvkU0Lf_U https://youtu.be/Uu8cFGtcZjw |

I went even one stage further with my X5 and did soundskins classic (metal backed weather resistant) on the inner door skins, then vapor barrier replacement and complete cabin bowl.

Pirelli tires aren't known to be quiet, but then again, no Summer tire really is. If you're not hard on your car you might be able to fit it with all season tires, which will cut a lot of the performance but be vastly quieter. Conti makes great A/S tires, I actually prefer them to the Michelins.

If I were to measure the dB today, comparisons to others' cars would still be a bit uneven. Tires, road surfaces (rubberized asphalt!), mods, MT or DCT (gearing, trans.) ... After doing the sound-proofing work, I added the stock resonator to the MPE to cut down the awful drone. All this being said, tire noise is not an issue for me. Tire wear? Oh yes. Oh well. Drive it like you stole it! Everyone has the option to share measurements. Good to know: https://www.auto-decibel-db.com/BMW_2_2018%20M2.html How to measure: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/noise/app.html Discussions on sound deadening in this forum remind us that, "Haters gonna hate." $30 + tax + shipping to try the front fender to body seals. 30 minutes of messing around. |

Good news, bearings are fine. Not so good news, the tires are just loud and the lack of sound dampening only exacerbates that. I’m running the original Pilot Sport 4S ‘summer tires’ and while they’ve only driven 17k miles they are almost 5-years old. I’m considering trying a set of Pilot Sport All Season 4 next. Had them on my last car and loved them. |
