2017 M2 - Tracked 3 Times - Should I Be Concerned?
I have been in the market for a 2017 or 2018 M2 for a few weeks. Found a very clean 2017 (12,750 miles). Good price. The owner said he has tracked it three times? Any cause for concern? Car seems in very nice condition

Ask for complete maintenance and shop receipts. Get a PPI (Pre Purchase Inspection) done by a reputable BMW specialty shop and go from there. If they refuse, walk away. GL! |

I agree with the Pre Purchase inspection. Especially have them look at how much brake pads are left. Other than tire wear and brake pads, tracking shouldn’t hurt the M2.

IMO tracked means nothing...unless he was racing the car. Really the only place in North America to drive these cars is on a racetrack. It is just a learning experience for the driver. If he was just lapping then I would say you are good to go.
Ask him. He clearly has integrity.

3 track days is not even scratching the surface. There are members here with over 40 track days. Most modern sports and muscle cars are designed to handle track work. Tires and brakes are consumables.
When I was selling my Mustang I was also honest about the 15 track days I had on it. I even shared my videos with the guy. He paid to have PPE at a ford dealer and I ended up buying him a new battery. But the car was 5 years old, so it was time anyway. As others said check for mods. People throwing parts at the car without understanding the effects can be a much bigger problem than track time. Last edited by 5.M0NSTER; 05-16-2019 at 12:38 PM.. |

Check the color of the calipers and the outer edges of the front tires. There's going to the track as a beginner compared to going as a more advanced driver. Beginners at a track won't put as much wear in one track day vs an advanced driver. Even 3 track days is still considered beginner-low intermediate level with most groups.
The calipers will be the biggest tell as most track rats will have alternate wheel/tires and brake pads they'll put on. But most won't be switching brake calipers. If the front calipers are significantly darker/green/black than the rears, tells you that the 3 days isn't true or he's one of the more advanced drivers. Edit: another thing to check for with the calipers is the backs of them. Paint is chipped to hell as you have to hammer the pins back in when switching pads and it's kind of hard to be accurate as you're hammering blind for the most part Last edited by greasypeanut; 05-16-2019 at 12:47 PM.. |

The fact he tracked it and told he sounds honest and would also have said if he modded. Doesn't sound like a deal break on that alone

I appreciate their honestly but I would never purchase a vehicle from someone who dogged it at a track..
I don't care how good a deal it is, engine, clutchs, tranny ect. are expensive and you can never measure how worn they are in the inside.. But that's just me.. #CaveatEmptor Blown Engine/Piston - Suggestions https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1614600 A (private) dealer sold me an M2 with a flagged VIN... what do I do? https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1491357 |

Let's say you are planing to buy a used sports car from someone who has never been to the track. What does that mean? That he never WATs when there's an open road ahead? That he'd never been to a twisty road and driven the car hard?
This a sports car. It'll not be easy to find one second hand from an old lady who only drives to the park everyday a few miles and never passed the 3000 RPM mark. |

Typically track cars are cared for better and are not abused.

This. People who take their cars to the track seem to be very maintenance focused. You often need track inspections before you can even head out. Brake pads, fluids, all that should have been well taken care of.
BMW runs all the M cars on the track at the Performance Center. These cars do track duty for a couple YEARS. And they're driven (only) on the track almost every day. I've driven some M2s with 6000 miles on them, all on the track, and never had any problems. They refurb and then sell them when they're done. |

Agreed. OP, most ppl who track including me change their oil much more regularly than the BMW service intervals. Not to mention brake fluids along with regular tech checks that show up anything that needs maintenance. I baby the hell out of my car even though I drive the hell out of it on track. Your seller sounds like a good guy - as long as he’s got shop receipts and gives you a straight answer on mods, I’d still be in the market for that car.

A car that's been tracked (and left stock) will have faster than average wear on the tires and brakes. Account for that in your inspection and potential offer. Otherwise, I wouldn't sweat it at all. It's an "M" car, and that means that it was designed, engineered and built to withstand use at the track. That's not the case with any other mass produced car other than a Porsche or Corvette. And that last one is questionable...

I'd rather buy a car that's tracked once than tuned once.

I'd think that most cars that have been tracked have also been tuned. Generalizing, yes, but I believe that's true. Especially when it comes to turbocharged cars that can easily get more power from a simple tune.
