Nice time for the M2. Very competitive on the track for sure... can't wait to get mine out this summer.

Yep and a bit torqueless as well...

'HP sell cars, torque wins races' wasn't that the quote?

For everyone freaking out over the comparison to the C6 Z06 time of 1:40.9, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

1) That test was in 2007, which is 9 years ago. Tire technology has come quite a ways in 9 years.

2) Pobst wasn't driving for MT back then; it was Max Angelelli. I'm not saying Angelelli is an inferior driver, but Pobst has waaaaaay more street car experience at Laguna Seca at this point, so I'd expect the combination of more advanced tires and street car experience at the circuit to result in some advantage.

3) If you read the driver notes from the 2007 C6 Z06 test at MotorTrend.com, you'll see that Angelelli had plenty of feedback on why the timing was off pace with the 997 GT3, which put down a 1:39.5 in the same test. Oh how times change! The current 991 GT3 RS laps LS in 1:33.29.

Quote:
ANGELELLI saved the Z06 for last because prior experience suggested it would be a handful. “This one is definitely the most difficult to drive, because of the low rear grip and high power.” He doubts tires are the only culprit. “The front seems soft and heavy, and the rear seems too stiff and very light. So when you go into all the corners, you have enormous oversteer. Off power, on power, on brake-everywhere.” Angelelli also felt the chassis could use more torsional rigidity. He praised the steering and the limited-slip differential, however, and reckoned he’d love to take a Z06 out hunting Ferraris on the Italian autostrada, but for a twisty road-he’ll choose the 911 or Exige.
It's fun to look back on the C5 and C6 to watch the Corvette become a serious contender, and the C6 Z07 is still a superlative car, without question, but in 2016 it's a nine year old car. The C7 Z07 runs a 1:33! Progress, ladies and gents. Progress.

I have to agree. That time seems a ways off. My best time so far on Laguna Seca in my modified C5 Z06 was 1:50.1. It was the first time I took the car out to the track and I didn't come anywhere close to the level of grip and speed in the corners I should have, but I wasn't necessarily a slow poke, as I was passing plenty of people. I should be able to shave 5 sec off next time I go.

They're using their cell GPS to gauge time. I have the latest and greatest Samsung Note 5 and use the GPS mapping to time my walks and jogs. It's horribly inaccurate and inconsistent when you look at the data. They need a real timing transponder for the track. I call BS on the 1:40.88 time. This car definitely is not beating out a C6 Z06 Vette, Cayman R, and C63 AMG S at the hands of Randy Pobst.
So you're saying that you're capable of a running 1:45 on your second time on a track, but then you call BS on professional drivers that can be 5 more sec faster, all of whom have countless more hours of seat time and skill than you probably do? :
1:50 is pretty slow. He must be in the beginner group passing people because folks from on here are running 1:42 in an e92 m3. C6 z06? That should be WAY faster - just on the straights alone.

A lap time of 1:40.88 is 100.88 seconds. If we look at current gen cars that are within 2% (+/- 2 seconds) of this time, we're looking at cars like:

1:39.30 - Porsche Carrera S (991) [2012]
1:39.69 - BMW M4 (F82) [2014]
1:40.45 - Nissan GTR [2010]
1:40.50 - Mercedes-Benz C63 S [2015]
1:40.52 - BMW M6 (F13) [2013]
1:40.88 - BMW M2
1:40.81 - Jaguar F-Type V8 S [2013]
1:41.26 - Porsche Cayman S (981) [2013]
1:42.49 - Lotus Evora S [2011]

All times sourced from FastestLaps.com.

As you can see, the M2 is right on the heels of some serious metal.

Lot of guys underestimating the effect of an extra passenger. At Mid Ohio (2min course) it's worth about 1.5-2 seconds. So here it would be at least a solid second, probably more.

Wow! My SA told me the M2 was a real track machine when he tested it in Thermal last week. From these numbers, the M2 is confirmed to be one of the "ultimate driving machines"!!!

not the same as going for a jog, waiting for it to hit 3.1miles then checking the time to see what your 5k time is.. i.e. it might say the lap was a few tenths of a mile longer/shorter than actually traveled, but the time should still be accurate.

I'm not an expert but that adds up to me. I do, however, want to see what Randy can do with the M2. maybe they'll do a M2 v. M4 head to head.
He already did an M2 vs M4 head to head, unless you mean on Laguna Seca.
is this new? I haven't seen it. I have a sub to the digital magazine but don't get the video content "early" ...

that's a darn close result there!

It depends on the weight of the passenger and the relative weight of the car. For example, adding a 185 lb passenger in an a 4,300 lb F10 will have less of an effect than adding the same passenger to a 2,100 lb NA Miata.

It's best to take results as they are until we have test results under the desired conditions.

Just some explanations for all the Americans here. (That might be a bit „uniformed“ (or ignorant) regarding the drivers):

Martin Tomczyk (1:40:88): 14 years of DTM experience, DTM champion 2011, 7 victories, 7 pole positions, ADAC motorsport men of the year 2011, did one mistake during the lap according to his comments

The 2 „grip guys“ are Johannes and Ferdinand Stuck, both are sons of the famous and beloved Hans-Joachim „Strietzel“ Stuck . I'm sure also the Americans now „Strietzel“. Besides driving 5 years Formula 1, being 2-times Le Mans champion, 3-times Sebring champion and also DTM champion he is one of the most likeable racers ever (imho).

The „grip“ lap was done by Johannes Stuck (1:42:10): driven several brand trophy series, german gt masters (one time winner), vln endurance championship, …

So I expected Johannes being slower than Tomcyzk. Being 1.3 seconds slower is a huge difference for a professional – but being 1.3 seconds slower than Martin Tomczyk was o.k. for him.
I wouldn’t expect Randy Probst going faster than Marting Tomczyk (of course same conditions and correct timing assumed).

good info! I would have expected a darn fine driver to be that close to the DTM pro. I'd probably be 15 seconds off his pace, haha.

pobst is a beast and has lots of experience at the track and in new cars bc of his gig with motor trend. I guess we'll just have to wait and see .. I don't think I'd be surprised either way .. pretty sure lieberman would be slower than either of them though

Faster than the 981 CS.

That's pretty awesome = this car seems to be a little beast.

So far what I've not seen is how this car handles four or five laps into a session or at hotter tracks (Thunderhill/Buttonwillow/etc. in Summer). Does the engine get heat soaked after a few laps? Not that it's a deal breaker, but if the car can only put down these times on the first or second lap of a session, and only in March, it's worth knowing.

I'll believe the numbers when they use a proper timing mechanism. Cell phone GPS is pure garbage. He could literally be off by 2+ seconds on that claim.

Then 1:38.88 sounds fine with me.

About the laptimer: Why should BMW and Porsche use that stuff then if it's far off? Please explain...
