I believe you are correct here. Remember a thread talking about this. Not sure it's the sensor on the rear view mirror, windshield side, but it has to be sensing external ambient light. If this it then the auto dimming would be affected at very least.

Complaint filed. The design is unacceptable in this type of vehicle. I can live with it but BMW needs to know our dissatisfaction. Probably for every person who files a complaint there are a hundred others who feel the same way.

I doubt very much Bmw will do anything to address the issue. I emailed BMW Australia regarding it over a year ago, they just palmed me off to my local dealership who obviously could do nothing about it.

M2's Lousy Instrument Cluster.
It's pretty obvious that BMW realised there was a problem. That's why the complete change on the LCI. Even the my wife's 2016 M135i has the speedo markings in white, hence easy to read. Even a little coding that turned the instrument lights on at start up would help alot. Typical manufacturer, head in the sand ignoring a genuine safety issue. Photo of my instruments at 5:30pm on an overcast afternoon.

Also DONE
This is a real safety flaw. Add to the instrument cluster lighting issue at the following: File a Vehicle Safety Complaint https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ Last edited by bluescoupe; 12-22-2017 at 07:54 AM.. Reason: clarity |

Done. Only 3 complaints filed to BMW on the 2016 M2 so far. All are for this issue and may be members of this forum. I just filed too so there will soon be four complaints. Would encourage others to do so.

As there seems to exist no effective remedy for the 2016 M2 dashboard lighting issue (permanently switching on the lights being merely a minor improvement), below a couple of workarounds:
Alternative 1: get a P3 gauge (see here and here): Alternative 2: get an AWRON (see here): Alternative 3: get a BMW Head-Up Screen (see here and here) (remark: the mount for that official BMW device is only available for LHD): Alternative 4: get an M2 LCI or an M2 Competition: Personally, I went for the discreet P3 gauge.

Speedo and tech not visible in daylight
Has anyone come up with a way to make these more visible. Similar to the fuel gauge.
Major flaw from BMW on this one. |

Solution to the hard-to-see speedometer on early M2s!
Got this done today on my -16!
The speedometer backlight is now always on when the car is on. Turns itself off shortly after you turn off the car and lock it. Very happy! EDIT: BR diagnostics knows how to do it https://www.facebook.com/BRDiagnosticsRetrofits/ I guess he's here on bimmerpost but don't know his nick here. Tried to take a photo but didn't get a meaningful one, it's really much simpler for you to manually turn on your lights in the daytme and say "aha, that is what it'll look like" :-D
