New police policy
Seattle police will no longer pull you over as a primary offense for expired tabs or no front license plate.
This doesn’t mean that if you are pulled over for something like speeding or running a red light that they won’t also give you a ticket for expired tabs or no front plate. Interesting change in philosophy though. |

Oregon has given a pretty big grace period on registration as a result of covid. I think something like 120 days, and even then it's still up the cop to ticket or not.
On the front plate; I'm past 2.5 years of driving the M3 without a front plate, and no ticket/stops. The M2 hasn't had a front plate since I got it in 2017 and no police issues; but, I did get a ticket from a parking enforcement officer downtown for not having the plate. Circa 2005 when I lived in Idaho I had the front bumper cover of my prelude replaced, and since I was heading down to Arizona shortly after, I didn't mount the front plate. I did put the front plate on the dash. In under a week a got pulled over by a local cop and a state trooper. The local cop flipped a u-turn on a common arterial to pull me over. The state trooper was sitting in a median on I-15 maybe 10 miles north of Utah as I was driving south to Arizona. In both cases, no speeding. No anything but the front plate. Got warnings on both. Personally, I'm pretty okay with cops needing a better reason than a missing front plate to pull people over. It's not a lack of enforcement, per se, it's a lack of shit any of us really care about. If THAT is the reason to stop someone, then yes, please move on to hopefully anything people care about... Also, I'd note that nice cars (classics, exotics, etc.) likely get close zero shit for not running a front plate. It's a tool for either a) revenue collection, or b) an excuse to hopefully find something else. In my mind, neither is a good way to conduct a society.

I haven't had a front plate in like.. wow.. 15 years? One or two warnings (I think) total, no tickets, no issues.
