Going for Broke - An M2 Competition Saga
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Here's the full list and what I'll be updating / Have updated: Engine Bay: CSF Intercooler CSF Heat Exchanger Mishamoto Charge Pipes AFE Magnum force stage-2 cold air intake VTT CBC VTT Spink lock Crank Hub Weistec Billit Oil Filter Cap Golden Wrench Covers NGK Spark Plugs MSL Oil Thermostat s55 Exhaust: Active Autowerke Catless Downpipe Active Autowerke Single Midpipe Remus Race exhaust Brakes: Ap 9668 Front Stock rear 2nh Spiegler brake lines Ferardo ds1.1 pads Motoul 660 fluid Body: rkp carbon side skirts rkp carbon rear diffuser light weight perf. front lip Satin White Wrap by Chase.motors Suspension: Mcs 2wR coil overs Vorshlag Camber Plates Swift springs 120 front / 100 rear SPL front end links SPL rear end links SPL Arms (all of them) Team Schirmer Kinematics Front Camber: 3.3 0 toe Rear Camber: 2.5 1/8th toe Track Wheels: Stud Conversion Kit 90mm BBS RIA 18/10 et 25 BBS RIA 18/11 et 37 Street Wheels: Stock Wheels / PSS Interior: Recaro Pole Position SPG Schrimer Seat Bracket things For a little context on why / how this came to fruition: I grew up racing go-karts around the US and due to a series of unfortunate events I never made it to the next step and left my dreams of racing real cars on the bookshelf of things that we all say that we'll get to one day "when the times right." Quite frankly I couldn't stare at that bookend anymore. I had been toying with the idea of racing spec Miata or another spec series (e36/e46) and had saved up a little bit of money towards that when a series of fortunate events started to take place. Career change, some auto resources, and being hit by a drunk driver in October which totaled my last car and gave me a much needed push. I bought the car used in November 2020 from Porsche in Woodland Hills. I did the PECLA experience a few weeks before the accident and it re-sparked a desire in me that I couldn't suppress anymore. After a long stint of research, I decided I wanted to build a M2 competition coupe as I could get away with daily driving it to work, and plan for it to sit in the garage for quite some time. I found the car after calling every BMW dealer in So Cal, and scouring the web for about a week; I bought it the day I test drove it for 51k with 14K miles on the dash and all the options I wanted. I chose DCT for a variety of reasons, the biggest two being that I daily drive it in LA and that my favorite builds are the DCT Ring cars. The first hurdle we faced was cracking the DME. Luckily Pro Tuning freaks was very helpful with this, and they unlocked it for free as long as I shipped it to them. (stage 1 was fun, but why stop there? Stryker Performance in Orange County agreed to help with the build and away we went! A couple of other quick shout outs: Blake @ Chase Motors, Kevin @ EAS, Harold @ HP Auto, and Mike / Cynthia @ X-PH have all been a huge help navigating me through some of the parts / back order stuff. Thank you!

Oh! Couple of quick side notes. I have no track experience in a car, and no racing license and yes I realize this is all excessive.
To get comfortable with the car, I've done some 1000 ft drag racing, autocross, and been driving the canyons every weekend as we prep it for Streets of Willow on the 28th. I always wanted a wrapped car, and the GTS hood just looks so damn good (even saves 25 lbs) so this seemed like a natural step for both looks and paint protection. For the body I went with RKP side skirts, RKP diffuser, light weight performance front lip, and the Aluminum GTS hood all under a Satin white and Satin black wrap. CHase Motors in LA did a great job and I an SOO happy with how it turned out. (I've been asked about the visor sticker a few times and yet it makes the camera useless, but this only interferers with collision warning and automatic high beems)

Next up was the coilovers and track tires
Went with: MCS 2 way remote Adjustable Swift Springs: 448 lbs front / 560 lbs rear SPL front end links SPL rear end links Purchased from Harold at HP Auto works (who was a HUGE help!) Titan7 T-s5 19/9.5 et 27 Titan7 T-s5 19/10.5 et 44 Toyo r88r - 265/30 & 295/30 Purchased from EAS (Also been a huge help) Cars lowered slightly but not slammed at all, only slight rubbing at full compression with the Toyo r888r 295/30/19 rear but working with West End Alignment on 3/8 The ride is STIFF but in the best of ways. Incredible feedback from the road and cornering. I will have updates once it gets on the track and at speed, (waiting for alignment to be responsible and fair with that)

Installed:
AA Cat less Downpipes, AA single Mid pipe, and Remus race exhaust last night: We still have a little tweaking to go before I post sound clips but this shit is loud holy shit. Everything fit together really well, the modular system has the ability to tweak a lot of it which is good and bad, plan for an extra hour or so to just align everything so it positions properly. Side note, the stock exhaust only scraps for $5.88 (without cats) so I recommend selling yours if you do this lol. I didn't have a place to store it at this time so it is what it is for me.

Great build! will be following
I can only imagine how loud that it is now! I'm satisified with the volume of just the remus race backbox. You've deleted 4 cats and the resonator on top

Next step for the project was alignment and corner balancing. West end Alignment in Gardena, CA did the heavy lifting here and they rocked it!
SO far I'm really happy with how it turned out and the car handles like a dream combined with the MCS coil overs. Front Camber: 3.3 w/ 0 toe Rear Camber: 2.5 w/ 1.8th toe We're starting here as a baseline and will be adjusting accordingly. Curb weight update: Currently 3704:

DYNO Done today at European Auto source via BM3 and Jordan Tuned:
The car will be tracked with stage 1 e85 but we ran a stage 2+ e85 Dyno tune since I'm taking it out to shift sector April 2nd (1/2 mile drag race) and wanted to bring max power to that event. A Here's the results! Pump e85 fuel Max WHP: 583.52 Max Torque: 625.33 I tried uploading video but it didn't work stay tuned on that please or go to the gram page (still learning here)

Alright, ya'll, here's the "completed" engine bay.
We had to remove the plastic cover for the MCS pieces but I love the raw look of it so good riddance. CSF Intercooler CSF Heat Exchanger Mishimoto Charge Pipes AFE Magnum force stage-2 cold air intake VTT CBC VTT Spink lock Crank Hub Weistec Billit Oil Cap Golden Wrench Accents (which are covers, not replacements... but they do look nice I'll give them that) NGK Spark Plugs

It fits really well. It's not perfect, but it's close enough IMO. It's about 25lb lighter than the oem hood which was the biggest reason I did it other than style points. Visually, it's my favorite mod I've done

Need to make some adjustments on it still but will have some videos of that soon for ya'll. There's a clip of the DYno on the IG with that combo as well.
It's loud no doubt, but with the valves closed I can still get away with driving it daily.

Had the first track day in the car on Sunday! Ran a 129.458 at SOW Clockwise. Definitely could have shaved time off in a few places but need some more seat time in the car. Overall I'm really impressed with everything we've done. the car was way overpowered for the track and we're working on a stage 1 tune to fix that issue now.

just curious....
how the fuck do you get grip with those power numbers? I'm still on stock power, with a wider wheel and 275 cup2s still spin. i don't think I can get wider without rubbing. maybe everyone with big power is just running 60 treadwear? lol edit: never mind. I see now it says r888r. so yeah.. 100 treadwear tires. lol |
