It was my understanding that the cigarette lighter socket is disconnected from the battery via software-controlled circuit after the car has been switched off for a period of time. The last BMWs you could actually charge through the cigarette lighter 24x7 are the E85/E86 Z4 M Coupe and E46 M3, which are pretty old now.
Please let me know if that's not the case and it's been confirmed that we can indeed use a trickle charger via the cigarette lighter socket. I'd be genuinely surprised if it's supported in any F-series BMW. |

Great thread.
Question..can the charger be left connected for an extended period of time, say a month or so, or does it need to be removed once the battery is fully charged? |

Any decent battery maintainer like Deltran can be left connected to an AGM battery indefinitely. You will need to connect the leads directly to the battery in the trunk.

Questions about Trickle Charging 2020 M2C?
Two questions:
1. Is there an "Approved" trickle charger other than the BMW branded one? I'm assuming the BMW one is simply a rebranded one from some other manufacturer, and I'd just as soon go that way. 2. How did you wire in a permanent SAE cable? I believe the manual doesn't recommend going directly to the battery? In a perfect world, I'd like to hardwire in a SAE cable in a position that I can just grab the plug and connect to the tender as needed (e.g. winter storage, etc.) TIA-- I did Search, but nothing really came up addressing this directly that I could find. It's for an X6, and it's a temporary attachment to the charging port under the hood. I'm looking for a) something more permanent and b) what the OEM branded charger (a C-Tek?) is that would work on a M2C battery. Thanks though. R. |

I can't help you with the hard wiring, but most people use CTEK tenders. However, any standard battery charger that charges AGM batteries will work with the M2/M2C. BMW branded battery chargers come from a few different companies, but their latest are from CTEK. I bought BMW's latest CTEK charger because it has dual AGM and lithium batter settings, and I couldn't find this on a CTEK branded battery charger. (At the time I had an F80 M3, which has a lithium battery, but I figure as more cars switch to lithium batteries it is nice to have a charger than can be used for both AGM and lithium batteries).

This, in the trunk with a pigtail, is how I do my trickle charging and I'm actually using a Mercedes Benz branded CTEK I had from a previous MB. They're all the same, but with different features. |

Not sure about Lithium mode or if it is different than AGM mode but the latest CTEK model has an AGM mode. The older MUS 4.3 TEST & CHARGE model is required if you want the test feature.

I personally use the Ctek MUS7002 which has a snowflake mode for winter trickle charging and is also the standard mode for AGM batteries.
Make sure you connect it to the terminals under the hood and not directly to the battery.

On a 2020 M2 Competition, if I am using a battery tender, I use the connections under the hood. Does leaving the M2C hood up and open drain the battery in any way during the slow charging?
Thanks! |

You can run the cable up by the widpers and out of the engine bay if you want, that way you can keep the hood shut.

I didn't like the idea of opening the hood each time to use a battery tender so instead of using the clips on the charging points I used the rings. Charging point screws remove easily using a METRIC allen wrench.
Found an extension cable for use with the BMW charger on Amazon... I ran the extension along the hood up the base of the wipers. The end of the extension is capped so it's waterproof when not in use. Hi Prodigy,
Quote:
The answer is that you can leave this for an extended period of time: I have the CTEK charger as you know from the pictures/process and it's designed to remain connected almost indefinitely. Once it reaches "full" charge, it performs a regular top up pulse to keep the charge full on the car. The manual mentions that it continues to monitor the battery to keep the charge between 95% & 100%, providing a pulse every now and then to maintain this. The usual caveats on this advice apply: car & battery should be in good condition, and its best to try charging a couple of time while you are around to monitor it and make sure that there are no issues I've left both my BMW's on extended charge for over a month a few times (when I've been away on holidays) and the cars have been fine when I've returned. Hope this helps! Cheers, David |

I am debating between that model and the ctek MXS 5.0. Does the 7002 have features that I absolutely need for the M2C? Generally with these ctek tenders, do they all have the ability to stop charging once the battery is full? Never owned one or used one but in need of one. I find the BMW branded ctek charger to be way overpriced compared to amazon. |

The 7002 has more features like a high amperage supply mode, winter mode, more charging voltages etc. But overall none of the additional features on the 7002 would really be a must have for a m2c owner who just wants a trickle charger. I'm just an overkill type of person, so that's why I bought the 7002. IIRC the m2C has a standard AGM battery, if that's the case then the msx 5.0 has an AGM mode and would be perfect. If it is lithium then you would need a lithium charger like the one CTEK sells. Yes they monitor voltage and battery state, so they can pulse charge until it is "full" then stop. Technically speaking though it charges to 80-90% and stops, then after that it monitors voltage drop over a period of 48 hours and based on battery condition charges to 100%. Then it monitors and maintains the battery over the course of usage. The charger also has extremely low ripple compared to other chargers, which is great for the protection of electronics within the car. Ctek has been known to make the best intelligent battery chargers on the market, and in my experience they make a solid product and have alot of additional accessories. The OEM bmw charger, and OEM charger for many other manufacturers are just rebranded CTEK's, which goes to show you how good they really are to be the supplier for an OE.
