Intercooler and charge pipe?
So I'm finally ready to get an intercooler and charge pipe. I don't ever plan on going further than a stage 2 setup, so stock turbo. That being said too big of an intercooler could be overkill and cause unnecessary lag. I was thinking the CSF intercooler but is that overkill? or should I save some money and get the Active Autowerke Intercooler? lastly as far as charge pipes go, is there any one that stands out to be the best that's higher quality has better fitment, better couplers and better clamps?

I am not planning on going past HEX stage 2, but have a CSF intercooler and ER chargepipe (cold-side only) on order. I do think the intercooler is a good idea even for just street use on a stock turbo with a Stage 2 tune. I originally ordered a VRSF chargepipe, but when I received it the paint was already coming off... so I decided to pony up and get the higher quality ER version. I have been told that replacing the hot side chargepipe is unnecessary for a stock turbo. I was part of a CSF group buy, so I ended up paying $500 for the intercooler shipped.

I do plan on doing the fabspeed downpipe In a few months. So with the downpipe is the csf still overkill? My other idea was doing the active autowerke package deal you have. Would a downpipe be too much for the AA kit?

Both would work but the CSF would be the better option since it is a bigger intercooler.

It's not a necessary upgrade, but one that people do depending on the level power they're attempting to achieve. Which is why he asked if he was gonna buy a downpipe later on. It's just a weak point in the overall process. |

ended up going CSF intercooler and Active Autowerke charge pipe through mike@x-ph.com. couldn't beat his prices and his communication is so quick. waiting for my lightweight splitter and I'll get everything on at the same time. CSF intercooler is on backorder anyways

But, I mean, if that's what you think. Sure. Like I said, not necessary. Take from it what you will. After all, it's "I do not feel" which is your opinion. Last edited by Yiruna; 02-17-2018 at 03:42 PM.. |

It’s a well documented fact that the n55 chargepipe can break even at oem levels of boost, but more likely once tuned. Yeah you ‘might’ be ok but if it does go is it worth being stranded and without your car until it’s fixed.... |

One of my friends' m2 had his cp broken in early 2017 on jb4 map 6 running just as much boost as every other tune does today.
We call his car our 'm2 test car', because he has absolutely no respect for the machine and would try whatever available to explore the limit of power. And only fix what breaks. A lot of valuable stuff learned thru our extensive(brutal) testing on it the entire year (he and I), what works, what part makes power (truth may surprise many) and what psi stock turbo is comfortable with etc. CP is kind of thing should be done prior to anything else even on a stock car with no mods in plan. This test car didn't do it earlier because we always cheap out on it, using cheapest available parts, and abuse it as much as humanly possible. But what doesn't kill it only makes it stronger. It's been the quickest standing to 62mph(100kph) m2 in China at 3.88sec. Mod when getting that time = knockoff ic + knockoff cp + knockoff 200-cell cat + JB4 custom map on pump gas. And oh, RE71R 19 35 265 tire. This wasn't the most aggressive setup we did of course. BTW, on this setup, 1/4 mile was 12.05@117mph, not impressive but good enough to walk 99% of M2 out there I guarantee you that. It's a blessing of us (ok me) to have this test car.
