Anyone using Turbo blankets?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com there are studies and Infrared videos supporting the claims that these work. the concept seems sound enough. |

I see them all the time at Sema, it has become a must have mod for any turbo car, not sure how effective they are because if they were I would think that Ferrari and McLaren would be using them in their supercars so when I see mods like this I am always a little skeptical. I would think if your adding a oversized turbo and thus it is closer to the other components of the car and would put them at risk this seems like a must have. For a regular production car probably not so much.

I use one but not on the M2. Its on my Impreza rally car. I haven't tried to take any scientific measurements to prove it works but in the same manner I have partitioned off the cold air intake on the basis that any little bit helps....

I think the goal with such wraps is to keep the intake side of things cooler, but if you wrap your turbo does it increase the temp on the turbine side and perhaps shorten it's life? The turbos are both water and oil cooled so perhaps that wrap does not increase internal temp too much but what after shut down? If the car has after run pump then perhaps not, but if no after run pump then that nice wrapped pig in a blanket is going to be HOT!

I have a set from Funk Motorsports out of the UK, and planning on installing ASAP in my S55 M2C.
Videos and other evidence seem to support this being a good idea, and willing to give it a shot, even though the install is a bit of a bear. I will have a full DIY up asap though with two turbos its a bit larger challenge. Actually there is one bolt on the OEM heatshield that makes the whole job 3x harder.. **sigh** literally one bolt.

Surely Turbo Duvets or Quilts would work better?

I use one with my Borg Warner EFR 7670. No scientific before and after comparisons but the science seems sound and basically a must/ a might as well when you're already up there messing with your turbo set-up.

I was rather frustrated to find the front turbo heat shield has a single bolt down low preventing it from coming out. Really a bummer considering all top bolts and the rear shield come out from the top. My plan is setting aside a full day this week to take off whatever I need from the bottom to get to that stupid bolt. I will have a full DIY to share when done.

wish they had one for stock frame turbos. That would really help under hood temps.

It's very likely I am doing to wrap all of my intakes, charge pipes and heat blanket the downpipes as well. https://funkmotorsport.com/product-c...urbo-blankets/

Make sure you're careful with heat wrap, trapped moisture causes rust and pipe cracking even with stainless parts.

That said, the N55 with have a 6 port exhaust manifold instead of 3 and 3, so no.. more I think about it the N54 front wouldn't fit. I will ask though if they have any plans.

Just talked with them.. so they dont have a specific blanket for that turbo, but their 'T3' blanket would fit just fine over the turbine section for that. They have had a number of folks do that, it just wouldnt have the upper manifold portion.

I had a tuned 2012 WRX prior to my M235. The turbo on the WRX sat near and under the top mounted IC. I ran a PTP turbo blanket on that turbo for about 1 year. The science makes sense at the surface, but I can't say that I saw any improvement in turbo lag reduction (that motor had a good amount of lag), a measurable improvement in reduced IATs, or under hood temps as measured with a temp gauge while driving.
I could see the safety benefit of running a blanket on a large aftermarket turbo that's mounted high up and could inadvertently be touched, but otherwise, I don't see the point on a stock location turbo on a BMW. If you notice a performance improvement, it's likely in your head. As for install, sounds like a nightmare on these cars. The blanket needs to be tight to the turbine housing. If there's an oil leak that saturates the blanket, you do run some increased risk of a fire.
