2008 335i coupe dead after less than 50 miles

has anyone else out there had a problem with the car battery? i bought my car on saturday afternoon. drove it home then out to the mall and back home. parked it in the garage. the next day i drove it to the gym then stopped to grab some lunch then DOH!!! the car would not start. i was inside the restaurant for at most 30-40 minutes. i'm 99% sure that i held down the start/stop button to fully shut off the car and locked the door. called up my sales guy and told him i was stranded because the car i just bought yesterday would not start (also tried with key in the ignition but still did not work). he asked me where my location was and drove a courtesy car out to meet me 20 mins later.

he monkied around with it for a couple of minutes then called bmw assist to come check it out. i didn't wait for AAA to come because i had a friend with me so i took off with the courtesy car trusting that he would handle everything.

i called him back later to get the 411. he said the car started right away when they jumped it. i'm hoping its just the battery. they are running a full diagnostic on it still. should hear back from them soon.

what a bummer...less than 24 hrs old. in hindsight i probably should of stayed until the tow truck came to make sure everything went smooth.

where is your dealer? hopefuly it's just the battery not the fuel pump! should've jump start it if you had the chance so that you know it's the battery.

stevens creek.

the car was making a ticking sound when i tried starting it and the window didn't close fully when the door was shut. i think and hope it's just the battery. but something might of cause the battery to drain FAST

My thoughts as a lay person is that it's unlikely to be the battery. In your materials there should be a "2008 BMW Battery Log Form" The VPC inspects the voltage upon receipt, and the dealership is supposed to maintain it. Apparently without this log BMW can reject warranty claims.

This should not be your repsonsibility, as you've barely had the car, but in the big picture, because they have a whole procedure to maintain the battery, imho that shouldn't be the cause of the issue.

No question here - the battery is dead. Either it is faulty or the alternator isn't providing charge. Either way they'll fix it so don't sweat it. Shit happens!

sounds like you were driving another brand prior to the e92, from your observations I'm quessing you didn't close the door properly and it was trying to close it while you had lunch, like the old e36 the window tries to magnetically lock when you close the door.it while keep running after you remove the key.

I am still trying to get over the fact that you left your brand new car out in some parking lot with a tow truck driver and a sales guy!

Any chance you might have turned on the anti-theft system by mistake?

hopefully it's just something simple, like a bad battery or alternator. good luck with everything!

That's really bizarre, seriously folks, is BMW quality control really that bad? They have an entire procedure to ensure that the battery is kept charged throughout the mfg. and shipping process, and then if the vehicle is sold or on display. Or is it one of those dealerships don't know so we'll guess? Like I said, there is a 2008 BMW Battery Log Form that you should have with your materials. There are pink, green, and yellow vertical stripes on it. It shows that the VPC inspected the battery, when, what the voltage was, etc.

Thinks are going to happen! But, your bought a BMW, so, it's not your problem.. the'll take car of you.

Enjoy the loaner and let them worry about whats wrong with the car. You'll be surprised how effortless it was when it's all over.

Procedures are made to be ignored. Think every dealer goes through the entire CPO checklist with those cars?

I had a very similar situation when I bought my 2001 E46. The battery went bad in about a week or two. I remember reading in Roundel that BMW did have some lame batteries at that time. Plus, all the electionic crap in the car pretty much maxes out the battery BMW used. I'm somewhat surprised that this happened in a newer model.

Like you, I took it to the dealer at the time...they replaced it and I never had an issue again. In fact, I sold that car in July with that replacement battery in it.

Good luck!
