F30 Owners: Want an Front Mount Intercooler that flows better? Help us out!
I used ETS intercoolers in my previous ride, I wanted to see if there was anyone in the Washington state area that could be a donor car to see if this E-body style intercooler will need some modifications:
I live in CT, so it'll be difficult for me, otherwise I would do it in a heartbeat. I gained about 15-20whp when running higher boost with an upgraded intercooler, and obviously won't void your warranty. Previous E-series had the following pluses: Here's their info, please help the community out! 12613 NE 95th St Vancouver, WA 98682 Phone: 360-896-3000 Fax: 360-896-3100

I'm not expert on intercoolers, but how exactly does it provide a gain in hp? I thought it was more of a mod that helped the engine perform at peak longer more than a straight power gain. /noob |

With increased boost, which all of us with a tune will run, there will be increased heat.
So comparing stock versus a nice bar and plate design will flow better and cool more effectively=more hp! Here's a dyno they did on an N54 engine before and after a 5" IC: Of course, there was a tune and other goodies involved... -Shiv

Terry from BMS only saw 8hp increase At low boost and only 1 hp with high boost. This is with Meth. If you plan on using meth it cancels itself out with a stock N55 turbo.

Well, regardless of gains, the more aggressive a tune you get (unsure if we can use a Procede for our system?), the better the flow one will need.
Anyone in Washington able to loan a car?

That was with the BMS Flash. You have to change your turbo to really see a difference. It's on N54 tech. Now this is if you use meth. In a non meth car it will be more helpful.

N20 and n55 might both use the same after market intercoolers. That can be confirmed by the board vendor who was fitting to both f30s.

Jameson, could you see if anyone on the N20 might be interested to? If we drum up enough interest, might help the cause...

It's physics really, Sean Ivey didn't believe I'd be able to squeeze extra hp when I added an IC either, but was pleasantly surprised. I know the tunes are less aggressive in the BMW world, and the lack of a MBC doesn't help the cause, but I'm positive the current design and flow isn't that great...

methanol injected into your intake manifold to lower your intake temp and allow you to alter timing and adjust your AF's for more power...highly fun.

Would be down for a more efficient intercooler. Hopefully adds more top end hp.

1. methanol tank 2. lines to the tank 3. a tune 4. nozzles connected to #2 that are bored into the intake manifold that will spray based on the tune. it's complex, will void the living hell out of your warranty, but highly effective in reducing intake charge temp's and thus allowing you to reap full benefits of your N55 turbo...

So far, it doesn't seem the N55 small turbo flows enough to really take advantage of an aftermarket IC setup the way it does on other cars such as the Evo...Yes, it will help keep heat soak down over general driving periods but you won't see the numbers the N54 is making with an IC it seems.
Here is a link to a test on an N55...although this is with meth it helps keep things into perspective. http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showth...55+intercooler

I have to get the vane sizes, but the Mitsu turbo specs are: Turbo = TD05HR-16G6-9.8T (GSR / USDM) TD05HRA-16G6-9.8T (RS/RS2 & NZDM) or 6MT:TD05HRA-16G6-10.5T (model unknown) Nozzle Area (cm2) = 9.8 Turbine = USDM EVO 8 & JDM GSR =Inconel (steel alloy), Compressor = Aluminium, 68mm wide Flow rates//Max Output: TDO5H-16G-7CM2 505 CFM TDO5H-16G-10CM2 505 CFM TD05-16G (small) 345-365hp @ 22 psi TD06-16G (large) 365-385hp @ 22 psi N55 turbo information (I could find, since I'm new to the platform): 53mm Inducer and 46.1mm Exducer A borgwarner b03 is all I could find...they are so tightlipped... Judging from the sizing, the Mitsu turbo is jesus larger... 98/68 verus 53/46. That's why we are such low end torque monsters, and honestly you probably don't want too large of a turbo on an inline-6...HOWEVER, with that said (and little information I have on the N55 b03), I would imagine if we increase the flow, the heat would increase, and an efficient IC would be good.

An intercooler will run you around a $1000. But it can be run a stock car but will be hard to remove before service and BMW will most likely void your warranty if they see it. We use to build turbo cars without intercoolers and just use meth. That way you reduce the flow restriction and would get great power on low boost. Its actually old technology but since turbos were not popular in the 90’s and early 2000’s people didn’t use them a lot. It started becoming popular with the turbo craze. |

Definitely want to get a better intercooler for the F30 (currently on its way from the port); I had ETS 5" on my E92 and really liked it. Anxiously awaiting the F30-specific product!
