Stating to obvious, the size difference and probably stiffness.
Suspension setup is the same type (may have some minor differences though). Front: McPherson Strut Rear: Multilink And before anyone starts saying the 1 series chassis is based on the E46, it's not. |

Hey, isn't the 1-series chassis based on the E46?

I thought it was more that the E87 and E90 were developed using a common platform.

I am not sure about this but this is very probable judging by the development time frames. I am not surprised if the E87 and E90 may have developed with similar modular designs or design cues. But in the end, probably the two chassis have little in common. |

The 1 series uses the same chassis as the 3 series (E90), the overhangs are shorter which accounts for the difference in length. From reading reviews, the 1 series rides a stiffer and rougher than the 3 series.

Where's Fleet when you need him? I also thought the 1-series was based on the E46... Especially considering that the 1-series (2004) has been out long before the E90.

My understanding is that the e90 and 1 series have the same chasis/platform. It is in this way that the 1 series can be produced on a (for BMW) cost-effective manner.
It is the X3 and Z4 that have the same e46 platform/chasis (with the X3 obviously reinforced and modded suspension).
