Someone tried to pry my hood open

Man, this car is a target! I've had it less than two months and I have a second experience with vandalism. This time I noticed the very forward lip of the hood, directly center in front of the roundel, was pried up a bit - it left a small, shallow crease in the hood. Looking at the paint on the piece below, you can see that someone tried to pry the hood open. They must have got scared off pretty quick, for the damage is relatively minor, and they didn't get in, and nothing is missing... just that crease and a scratch on the hood in the same general area.

Well, I have an appointment to get the factory alarm installed on Wednesday. Hate to do it, but this car attracts diseased scumsuckers like none I have ever owned before. Oh well, they can install and code my Sirius radio that I picked up from Crown at the same time!

Actually, the BMW 3 Series is not a target compared to other, more popular models.

Here are the 10 most stolen vehicles as reported by the NICB — the number in parentheses is the model year most stolen:

1. Honda Civic (1995)
2. Honda Accord (1991)
3. Toyota Camry (1989)
4. Ford F-150 (1997)
5. Chevrolet C/K 1500 (1994)
6. Acura Integra (1994)
7. Dodge Ram Pickup (2004)
8. Nissan Sentra (1994)
9. Toyota Pickup (1988)
10. Toyota Corolla (2007)

I can vouch for this as yesterday, my daughter came out of her office to find her car, a 2011 Ford Focus, on blocks. She works at a corporate office in an upscale area and parked about 100 yards from the main lobby. The theft happened sometime between noon and 2:00 pm.

Must be the area. Some people just hate anything that they can't have and want the owner to feel bad for that.
I know for sure that I sleep a lot better without my integer now. On different occasions I have had lights, rims, and my front lip stolen. Until finally the whole car was stolen. And later found without a front clip, leaving me with the tow bill.

I feel ya man. Sometimes you can't win no matter what you drive.

Just as a BTW, I lived in Huntington Beach before, and the people there were much more rude, though they had more money. IN HB and the surrounding areas they will push a shopping cart into your ride in the parking lot of a supermarket and not even think about leaving a note.

Money does not equate to class, I am sorry to say.

Thanks for the civil reply. I can see after a couple of the others why BMW drivers have the reputation of being wannabe rich boy pricks.

Yeah, but in most places they will kind of sneak away, acting a bit guilty if they see it. Here in snobby areas they will do it and act like they are not doing anything wrong... "we are pretending we have money instead of a ton of debt, so we deserve to treat people like dirt" kinds of bitches.

Not to be the bearer of bad news but an alarm won't prevent what happened. Sure it will deter thieves once they get the hood open, but the hood switch is pretty far back in the engine bay.

You actually need to open the whole hood in order for it to set the alarm off.

Yeah, I just figure I may as well get it. It is dirt cheap, and even if it only scares off amateurs, well, that is better than nothing. I like the internal sensor, at least it will start making a lot of noise if someone breaks a window to grab stuff out of the car.

Very true. I got an alarm installed as well.

I'm pretty sure it's never been used (set off). But it is a bit of peace of mind.

+1 these are cars cannot be stolen unless they are towed..an alarm does nothing to prevent random vandalism.

It might limit the amount of damage done by scaring them off more quickly, especially if in a public place. Small effect, I know, but better than nothing.

I guess when you do live in a society with a lot of inherent inequality you face the consequences. on the upside, you are wealthier becuase of your inequality...or at least the upper middle class should be, so you have the means to pay off these acts of vandalism.

comes with the territory.

It ain't right, buts its reality in these big american (and even the couple large canadian cities)...inequality and lot of peopel with low socio economic status...gonna get more acts of vandalism.

Sorry to hear it.

I was thinking the same thing. Most people who don't own BMWs don't know that the battery is in the trunk.

It's a kinda dumb thing to do for vandalism, and the car is impossible to steal without a flatbed.
