Warm weather engine pinging???
I thought I solved my engine pinging last fall...turns out it may have been the cold weather that did it. My engine pings on light accelleration. So it pings my whole commute to work.
I have tried the obvious like Techron additive and running the car harder than normal to clean it out... Anyone else hear of this? |

Chevron Supreme....no tune at all.
Dealer said there is nothing they can do..told me to drive it long a distance. My commute is 15 mi...that is the shortest distance I ever drive. I am going to take it back again. I am also going to read about the additive you recommended...thanks. The chance that warm weather has some affect is curious. Don't some states regulate gas formulation by season? How many miles u have on it..
I have an old eclipse that pings when I use 87 so i have to run 93 octane so it wont..I am 99% sure you have signifcant carbon deposits on your intake valves..thats what is causing your detonation..the fix would be to take the head off and clean the intake valves but its $..that cleaner may help but if you have significant carbon deposits then you need to manually clean it.. |

DUDE if your under warranty they HAVE to fix it for you..find another dealer cause thats BS...detonation will cause serious engine damage over time..the fact dealer stated there is nothing they can do is unacceptable..

Occasional pinging isn't a big deal but pinging all the way to work is bad for your engine. The dealer will ask you where you get your gas. Make sure you've tried top grade gas from multiple sources (ex: Shell and Chevron). |

Never had a pinging problem in my 328, but I use LubroMoly Ventil Sauber Valve Clean + Jectron Fuel Injector Cleaner regularly...

***********UPDATE************
I have been running with Techron additive with the past few fill ups and the pinging has diminished. Combined with more aggressive running of the engine.
Just to reiterate, it was never severe or even moderate pinging. Just a light pinging on gentle acceleration. How often can I use the fuel additive? I hear carbon build up is an issue. Back in the 90's I had a SAAB with this problem. The solution was the same. I didn't keep that car long enough to see the long term result. I plan on keeping my E90 a long time and am wondering about this. Thanks. |

Fuel additive cannot prevent carbon build up on the intake valve since the engine uses direct injection. But hey your car should not be pinging at all, not even light pinging!!

Back to the OP, try a higher octane gas along the fuel addictive. Good luck with it.

Plugs are original with 48000mi on the car. Won't the car signal me when new plugs are needed?
I use chevron premium gas (92 oct). How many consecutive fills can I add techron additive? Maybe the problem is that most my driving is stop and go commuting. Wish I had the time to take it out for good drives more often tan I do. Last edited by 1smooth6; 06-11-2011 at 07:55 AM.. |

try taking it to another dealer and have a few gas reciepts to prove to them your getting high octane fuel. as said before them saying there is nothing they can do is unacceptable. did they give you anything in writing that says "there is nothing they can do".. if your motor dies you can make a case that you tried to get it fixed before major issues arose. good luck

Also, a bottle or two of Techron (use one per tank) won't hurt. |

Well,well,well....
Since the weather is warmer my window is down and I am noticing a lot of pinging BMWs!!!
Driving home today I heard three bimmers doing the same thing. All 2003 or newer. I was stopped so it wasn't my car. I bet the state has changed the fuel STD..more ethanol or something else. |

Mine has started pinging too. Its really pissing me off. I only use shell 93, and drive 90 miles per day, so its not short trips or bad gas. I've got 75,000 miles if it helps.

Couple of things. #1 pinging is not related to intake deposits but carbon buildup in the combustion chamber. #2 if you have an automatic coupled with short commute may cause a build up due to running rich. #3 It may be possible that your high octane gas isn't as high as advertised. #4. The ping may actually be valve tap.

This seems to be a common problem with the E90/E92 M3. I have an E90 M3 and have been dealing with BMW in both Australia and BMW in Germany on this. BMW says this is normal for the car. My experience it occurs between about 1400rpm and about 2500 rpm when the air temperature is over about 17 deg C. I always use 98 octane fuel. BMW have refused to adjust the ignition timing in this rev range to overcome the problem as they insist it is required to meet emission regulations and claim it will not damage the engine. It sounds like a diesel when pinging. BMW told me that if it annoys me that much maybe an M3 is not the car for me. I could not believe their attitude. Their ultimate version of the "Ultimate driving machine" as they advertise it is not for the motoring enthusiast. They are aware of the problem, but refuse to do anything about it. To me this is a poor design flaw. They claim to use award winning ion technology on the spark plugs to monitor combustion and prevent detonation, etc. That must simply be marketing hype.
