iDrive screen ideas (Current ccc unit not working)

Dear e90 community,

I have been reading online about the idrive and what kind of upgrades i can do to my 06 330i with ccc unit.

I'm planning for an upgrade in the future but currently thinking of fixing the current ccc unit as I don't have it working at all (Screen flashes only). Been looking on ebay to buy a used ccc unit then maybe in a year doing an android upgrade.

As far as my understanding (Correct me if i'm wrong), I have to have a working ccc unit since the android screen will be based on the BMW ccc unit. However, the prices of ccc unit are not cheap.

Would you recommend me to do the upgrade now or what should I do?

If you have and Idrive based car you pretty much have to stick with
some form of idrive. You can't put in any aftermarket Head unit that
will come as a separate screen and controller unit that I have heard off .
If you have the money and time NBT evo's are the latest form of idrive.
Wikipedia has some good idrive info.
Also the programming will be tricky.

I have a CIC for sale if interested.

I believe the android screens that go in the dash replace your existing screen, regardless if your old screen works or not. I could also be wrong.

Yes, the android screens replace the existing OEM iDrive screen. Not sure with iDrive cars; are there functions that are only available through the iDrive screen and not through the cluster? like resetting service intervals and the likes?
There is a great Discord community on these Android head units and there is a specific channel for BMWs only too.

The android units have essentially two worlds. One side works as the stock screen replacement and the other is the android side the android. A long press of the menu button or a swipe down switches between the modes. It works very well. I don't find myself using the idrive controller to control most of the android side and I normally just use the touchscreen but the idrive wheel/buttons can control many things on the android side. The steering wheel track skip, etc also still works for pandora/spotify when in android mode so it is very well integrated.

I have one on my CCC X5 with the early idrive and also one on my non-idrive e90.

The only annoyance I have is that it needs to be switched to the aux input for sound from the android unit. This works better on the non idrive car because the aux mode switching is done outside of the idrive screens. So It is harder to tell when the car is in aux mode on the idrive car (unless you switch to the car side) because it isn't visable when in android mode. With that said I just press the steering wheel button until I hear sound and then I know it is on the AUX so it isn't so bad.
