IMPORTANT TIP FOR GAS MILAGE
Hi Bimmers,
I have read many tips on this forum about the tips to increase gas milage in this era of skyrocketing gas prices. But, to my surprise not even a single person on this forum mentioned about the clean "AIR FILTER". The very first thing that increases the gas milage is a clean air filter, because air filter is the only part in a cars engine that comes in contact with the outer enviornment. I feel that when ever we cahnge oil and oil filter we all should make it a habit to clean the air filter or replace it. Comments Welcome. |

Cool.
I usually do this anyway when I have an oil change. Before I had my bimmer, they usually said 3000 miles for an oil change, 10-15,000 for other filters. But I usually do everything at the same time. I like to keep my fire engine clean...it's a clean machine! |

My MPG Experience
I've only got 1250 miles on my 325xiT but now averaging about 22 mpg with mix of local and bit of highway driving (average of 33 miles per hour). No Grandma driving, but none of this yet either.

For those newbies:
-Tire pressure, keep it under 25psi all the times. -All 4 windows down and the sunroof tilted at all times. Open the trunk too if your gas tank is empty. -Try to keep it above 4000rpm when accelerating. -If you have to wait in the car for more than 15minutes, but less than 6 hours, keep the engine on. -When stopped on a signal, keep revving your engine. -Make sure your trunk is full of stuff in there at all times. -Bigger, heavier wheels and heavy run-flat tires help also. -Change your front bumper, get bunch of spoilers. mess around with your car's aerodynamics. -turbocharge or supercharge your car, mess with air/fuel ratio and make sure it runs really rich. Do all this, you will average at least 60mpg highway.

that air filter thing.....isn't that true for older cars? Most of the E90s on here are practically brand new and unless they live in the desert, there should be no reason to have a dirty air filter.

actually, in the typical large city, one cubic mile of air can hold up to 400 tons of dirt (European Car Magazine)...and you being in boston, and I in Chicago...just more reason to make sure we change our filters more often. You may not see it, but its there; both our cars and us are breathing it all the time.

From my math, it's almost 20 billion (19,871,723.52) cubic inches per ounce of dirt. Wonder how many cubic inches of air / hour go through the air filter in a modern car. --gos |

Good Q for my 12 year old, but he's not here, so something like 3 liters x rpm/4 x T. 2250 liters per minute at 3000 rpm (137272.5 in3), that seems like a lot of air! So by this formula, about 145 minutes to get an ounce. I think I better leave it to the kid to figure out...

I change my air filter every time I fill up with fuel, but I do drive a diesel so dont expect to refuel until 2008, even though it does have a turbo!
Good luck though my American cousins, and just wait until you pay £1/litre (thats about $1.84 at todays exchange rate), then you can really worry about the price of fuel.
