My car arrived last Friday. It sat in the garage until I could arrange to get it PPF'd and ceramic coated. Today is the last day of curing. The anticipation is killing me.

Tomorrow, we roll, finally.

First drive

I finally got to drive the car for the first time today. Went 30 miles. Mind you, I haven't purchased a showroom new vehicle, other than an SUV here or there, since 2007. Old cars, yes. New cars, no. The last semi new modern car I bought was an 2009 911 Turbo. Sold that one in 2016?

I've never owned a BMW, except the 74 2002 tii I restored.

First impressions:

-I like the exhaust note. Nice and mean.
-The hill hold/shift thing is a new one for me. At first I didn't like it, but I think it'll grow on me.
-The clutch engages very early and seems, well, I'm not sure what's going on there. It's fine, just different.
-There is a tremendous amount of power available. Obviously I have to break it in first to realize the potential.
-The upshift light thing, if that's what that thing is, is annoying.
-The brakes are touchy as hell. I'll get used to them.
-The stereo is a good one. I tweaked the settings to my tastes.
-Steering is very tight and responsive. I have a feeling I could get dangerous with that!
-Car handles great.
-iDrive? Still figuring that out. Doesn't seem that bad.
-Seat settings are a work in progress.
-Thick steering wheel is fine.
-It was almost empty and took 12.5 gallons. Tiny tank. My old 911 takes like 20 gallons or something.
-9 MPG displayed? Geez.
-Too many buttons everywhere.
-I haven't gotten into all the M1/M2 settings yet or pushed any of those suspension buttons.
-Thank God for Cruise Control. Cops were out today.

Updates to follow. What a car!
(Saw a MB one on the way home on Route 100. Anybody here?)

So jealous and cool write up! The dealer I’m buying from (out of state) is taking their sweet time. Not impressed.

NYNick, thanks for sharing your first impressions - sounds good and I imagine you'll add new thoughts with more seat time.

I can't wait until I can get mine on the road. Finishing up PPF/Ceramic coat and a few cosmetic mods. It'll be cool to compare our impressions.

Good luck with your new ride!!

Agreed on the clutch. My only other complaint is I wish it came a little lower from the factory and had comfort access.

Other than that, I love the way the stock exhaust sounds. Steering is perfect. Love the suspension. I'm still not past breakin so I haven't been able to extract all the power yet but hopefully soon!

The bad fuel economy paired with the tiny gas tank is a bummer. I’m only 600 miles in on my car and so far it feels like I’m always filling up

My PPF/ceramic coating process took 5 days....felt like a month. I added some cosmetics as well, but I hesitate to post them and get flamed.

What upshift light are you talking about? Where it tells you what gear you should be in? I don't love it when it tells me to be in 6th gear at 40mph but I've learned to ignore it.

The fuel economy and size of the gas tank is a bit disappointing. I expect bad fuel economy but give it at least 15-16 gallon capacity. FWIW, I've been averaging just over 16MPG with almost all short city trips.

The wheel gap / ride height was my biggest disappointment which is exacerbated by the short length of the car, but a set of springs solved that without changing the handling dynamics.

Overall, the car is a huge win.

Congrats, I'm sure the car will bring many smiles for years on end.

You can turn off the suggested gear indicator in iDrive…so it doesn't suggest 6th gear anytime you're over 40mph.

Yes, that's the upshift light that's annoying. Reminiscent of cars from the 80's for Pete's sake. I feel the same way as you do. "You want me to be in 6th gear? 2K RPM's and 40 MPH? WTH?"

Well done on your exquisite taste in your first ever new BMW.

Awesome observations and write-up OP.

I'm told the clutch gets better in time as does the exhaust note, although, I like them both as they are already.

I've driven mine 325 km so far. I've topped up fuel three times and the best economy I've got so far is a touch under 10mpg or 23.4 Lt/100km and at $2/Lt for 98 octane, it requires the budget of an oil tycoon to daily this car (which mine isn't)

Congratulations

I've been staring at this car whenever I went to the dealership for the past almost 1.5 months; saw the SOLD sign and held out hope that there was something wrong with the deal Congratulations; perfect combo. Still broken up that I missed it ...
