N55 knock at 3k rpms
Sounds like the infamous spun rod bearing, I caught it today I haven’t drove it since. Can a simple rod bearing replacement save the engine or is the engine toast?
Video of sound here https://youtu.be/FEkd_ew-eOU Taking it to an indie euro mechanic but I’d love input from owners who’ve had this issue. There are no check engine lights and the car actually runs great. For precaution I just haven’t turned it on since I heard that. The car is currently out of warranty and I owe over $7000 on it still. Since I’ve owned it at 43,000 miles I’ve changed oil at 4000 - 5000 miles and do all the maintenance myself. It’s my commuter, currently has 83k What i think caused it: I replaced my spark plugs for better performance for NKG one step colder plugs after running the car hard my car shut off and went to neutral. Since then I replace the OEM spark plugs and car went back to running fine a week past now now I heard this noise on a cold morning. Update ** Took it to BMW of Niello, after paying $210 for a diagnosis they found metal shavings In the oil, recommended getting a new engine, cost is $26,120. Worth more than a new car at this rate. Reached out to BMWNA.

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...8#post27036258 Long story short, the dealership was not able to determine what the cause is without tearing the engine down. They did however drain the oil and found metal specs in the oil, so they recommended I replace the engine. I would start by checking the oil filter for metal shavings and go from there. |

I bought my car at 41k and now I have 87k on it, so i'm curious how this plays out. My car isn't stock though and no problems so far besides from the classic ofhg, vcg, and probably coming soon waterpump+thermostat.

That's my next preventative maintenance DIY. Although the M Sport cars may have 2 water pumps - one primary and one auxiliary. I'm waiting to install the ER TIC to get a better view of some of the cooling system plumbing.

thats a good point, if the car was second hand maybe the first owner did a dme flash (MHD, BM3 or custom) or a TCU flash (XHP). If it is maybe you could scan the car through the obdII and look for shadow codes. I'm just surprised and worried to see this happen on a more or less stock car.
