My BMW M2 Competition was stolen - See how (VIDEO)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
On the night of February 20, 2020, my BMW M2 was stolen.

The film was recorded by the the Netatmo camera (http://myap.pl/netatmo)

Theft was done using the "on the suitcase" method

My car managed to recover after 1.5 hours less than 40 km from home after police chase - it was parked and turned on (probably thieves wanted to come back after making sure that it was not tracked) on German license plates.

Keep the keys away from the door so that they cannot be scanned and the car will not start. I didn't do it, which made the theft possible.

The thieves were masked, well prepared.
The whole took 5 minutes.

Car recovery would not have been possible were it not for the sports exhaust that woke me and my neighbors and disturbance GPS.

Unfortunately, my plates (S0 YOL0) were thrown away somewhere ... if someone found them, I would be grateful

I would also like to praise the policemen from the Poviat Police Headquarters in Bełchatůw (admittedly they punished me with fines but I forgive)

They tackled the topic quickly and professionally❤️

Share to warn others.

I've gotta go back and look at the paperwork but I recall signing something that would authorize Bmw to track my car in the event of theft. Sounded almost like a LoJack, but I know it wasn't and was factory installed equipment.

Apparently, what I learned recently is vehicle theft are way more prevalent in parts of Europe than they are the US, hence the reason BMW integrated a "deadlock" to the vehicle's security, in those regions.

My biggest takeaway is to buy a faraday bag/box and just store my keys in there when i get home. Might just do that.

Glad you got your car back OP

Yeah I don't understand why car theft in Europe is so much more common.

Yeah I don't understand why car theft in Europe is so much more common.
This is my ignorant assumption but I'm guessing car thieves are more resourceful and have better technology to circumvent the vehicle's security apparatus in Europe, than they do in the US :

How hard can it be to acquire the same tech? I wonder if it's easier to sell a stolen car or parts of a stolen car in Europe than the US so it's more worth it and less risk in EU?

I would hate to speculate without having all the facts but you're probably right. It must be easier to swap VIN tags and get away with it in Europe.

I know here in NY, a guy I know had an ECU from another vehicle installed in his car and after his annual OBD2 emission inspection, auto crime detectives showed up at this house to investigate the discrepancy.

Maybe "vin-jobs" are more difficult to pull off in the US. Just an educated guess but I could be wrong.

Sucks for the owner.

Cars like the M2 need a proper garage.

At the very least take the time to put on a car cover.

I donít know if it is more prevalent in Europe. But if it is, Iíd argue itís because of the ease of moving it to a foreign market. They arenít resold locally, they are parked up for a few days to see if there is a tracker. And then if not, they come and collect and go straight in a shipping container. Steal car in UK, ship it to Cyprus and give it a new identity and new paperwork. Lots of EU cars end up in the ĎStans, Albania, Africa. Recent UK documentary found plenty of Range Rovers in Mozambique with British dealer stickers still on them!

Steal in the US and less places to ship to cheaply? And, honestly, more home owners with guns, so itís riskier maybe?

Just a guess though.

What the faq you get fined for? Doesn't seem reasonable to get fined for this.
