DIY A-pillar noise fix without removing the windshield

After seeing there was a factory service bulletin for the snapping noise I went to the dealer to see what exactly it was. The fix was to remove the windshield and separate three layers of sheet-metal. Apparently the twisting of the car was causing them to make a snapping noise . What i did was to remove the a-piller cover and with a tool i made out of a screwdriver pryed the layers apart. Its amazing that that is where the noise was coming from. I would have bet it was coming form the top of the windshield. After i road-tested i went back to my dealer and showed the tech how it could be repaired without removing the windshield. They were very appreciative because when you remove the windshield you can end up with other leaks and noises. So glad its gone was driving me nuts!! carl

Thank you so much, Carl! I was dreading to have my windshield removed just for that stupid click. As you said, windshields often leak just a tiny bit after replacement.

Top work Carl.

I don’t have the noise but if it ever did surface, the thought of the windshield being removed was a nightmare.

Mine sounded like a credit card snapped on a glass table. It's a quick click. It might happen several times or it might only do it once. Then eventually it will come back again triggered while driving the car.

Awesome. Glad it can be fixed without removing the windshield. I would never of thought it was coming from that metal peace.

So the fix is just stick a screwdriver in that hole and pry the metal apart more??

Yes the service bulletin just shows prying the three layers apart. If you do it leave the a-piller cover off and test drive if it still clicks pry a little more. I had to do it about 3 times to get it all to go away. Im ocd so I have tested it on every road that i knew it did it on. After the first time it was about 90% less then i kept prying a little at a time till i couldn't get it to make any noise . Probably about a total of 25 miles of testing . I was convinced it was coming from the top of the windshield. I have spent well over 30 hours trying different fixes over the last 6 weeks, never would have guessed? I think the reason they have those layers is to absorb some body flex so it doesn't transfer to the roof. But its just a theory, there's probably an engineer on this forum that can explain the design?? carl

Awesome thank you for the information.

I did not hear anything driving 900 miles in my M2 in Europe on my European delivery. But the roads in Germany were super smooth hard to tell if I had this issue.

Is this on all MY M2?

Also what is the fix? To pry the layers apart?

I initially had a creaking but dealer blamed it on the tint.

Haven't heard it at all this year but then again I usually have the radio cranked up

My 2017 M2 (non LCI) started doing this clicking noise (on top of my front window) after 25.000 miles... Today it did what was described in this post and I did not hear it again...let's hope it stays this way. Never imagined it could be this that caused it

I don't have a M2 comp, but now I'm happy I sometimes read in the M2 comp section

I used this...

The service bulletin # 51 19 17 is non vin it covers all 2 series and was published in may 2014. They never fixed it probably because it doesn't affect all cars, cheaper to just repair . Many owners may just live with it or don't notice? carl

Have heard noises more like vibrations from that area, not "snapping". That said, my car is so freaking loud, maybe I just don't hear it?? I do get a lot of creaking from the roll cage, so maybe that is hiding/masking this noise. Will have a closer listen. Good to know there is a fix...thanks OP!

Great solution, I believe your dealer owes you a few oil changes!

So I have this annoying noise going on for 6 months or so and I dropped it off at the dealer last week prior to finding this thread. They were having trouble reproducing the noise and I passed along the service bulletin (which I had to pay for the login) and a link to this thread to the service advisor. The dealer proceeded to ignore the thread and crack my windshield while following the TSB. In hindsight I should have just fixed it myself.
