Keeping Exhaust Flap Open

Hello all,

Has anyone successfully coded the flap on the standard M2 exhaust to be permanently open? (for a nicer sound)

If so, what code was changed in Bimmercode?

If not via code, is there a mechanical way to keep it open? (like the M3/M4 mod)

Thanks,

Its exactly the same as the M3/M4 mod...just that there is only one connector to unplug instead of two.

There used to a guy on the forums that sold the dummy plug kit which was pretty inexpensive, but his website (jrc-designs.com) doesn't seem to be up anymore.

Yup, this would be the easiest and most convenient way to do it.

That or you can just open the valve in sport + then Unplug the valve (saving you a few dollars )

If you want full control over the settings, you can use a valve controller: https://www.cgprecision.com/#!/VSC-1...egory=19726366

Mine is default to open on startup, and when I activate it, it closes (for morning cold starts). I also have it synced to my homelink buttons, which is nice!

I have a CG controller myself but the fact of the matter is

Bimmerlink is $25

CG VSC-1 is $200

If all he wants to do is force open his valve and have the valve setting retained by memory of where he last set it, bimmerlink is fine for that. With a stock exhaust you really don't need to be opening and closing the valve on the fly, It's quiet enough as it is so you can just force it open and forget about it.

CG is better for people with Downpipes and Aftermarket Catbacks (that retain OEM valve operation) who need to close their valves at certain times because their car is too loud otherwise. You don't have this issue with a stock exhaust.

Very true, just throwing that out there as an option

just did this using bimmerlink

had flaps open for a whole 5min before put it back to auto.

IMO makes it sounds worse. I completely lost ALL of the pops and bangs on overrun or when dropping the gear.

all I got was a slightly louder muffled loose-fart noise with the flaps open

I must admit I didn't get to hear it at full blast on the freeway, but given 99% of my driving is on suburban back roads, id rather have the low speed pops and bangs

Weird b/c on my (not stock) exhaust it made 0 difference or change to the amount of pops and bangs, all it did was make them louder or quieter depending on if the vales were open or shut.

Thanks for all your helps guys.

That is also interesting that you had a reduction in bangs and pops! I am not too sure how that is possible with the valve now open, but I will certainly give it a go myself and see what the difference is!

I've got kept the flaps open by unplugging the valve connector, but same as andrew...no change to the behavior other than volume.

Awron gauge can control the flap too. On stock exhaust, it's barely noticeable.

Also, FWIW, the flap seems to be open at first at lower RPMs, regardless of mode. I say this because when I am sitting somewhere idling and I have it in Auto mode, the first time I push my steering wheel button to change mode, it goes to Open next. I don't hear any valve noises from the exhaust when it changes from Auto -> Open. Press it again to go to Closed mode, and only then do I hear the valve make a noise and whir shut.

So at lower RPMs at least, the valve is open regardless of drive mode (even in Comfort).

I am guessing that with an aftermarket exhaust (using factory valve system, i.e. not the M Perf system), it may be more noticeable... but with stock catback I can hardly tell the difference. Changing drive mode makes much more of a difference in sound, because the different drive modes are what cause it to start dumping extra fuel (for popcorn noises).

Opening the flaps is what gives mine the pops and gurgles hm

It's actually the sport mode that gives you the pops and burbles. The open flap just makes them more noticeable.

I noticed you said bimmerlink saves the last setting you enter for exhaust valves. I bought a VeePeak OBD2 adaptor that connects fine with BimmerLink, and I can code the valves to open. But how to I get it to save this configuration so it’s always open? After 15 minutes of driving the car or whenever my phone auto closes the app the valves shut again. I then have to open the app again, and once it connects to the OBD adaptor it turns right back on, but I have to do this EVERY time I get in the car, which is more of pain and exactly what I didn’t want lol. Anyone have any suggestion? Wondering if I’m doing something wrong or missing a step

I have a little mod box from Berger motorsports that allows you to keep flaps open/closed and it stays that way until you change it. You just plug it into your OBD2 port. You can change some other things too.
