So I drove an M2 today but also consider a Cayman S
Autotrader ad for car I drove today
I drove this today. I feel deeply conflicted, I also drove a Cayman S and man two very different cars getting me to a happy place in different ways. So this M2 has the M-Performance exhaust, but even with that it seems pretty quiet. Must be the turbos. It was stupidly fast if I am being honest. That engine is a monster. So first off- is their pricing reasonable? Next- has anyone heard a strange clanking from just under the console upon starting? It made a disconcerting noise a couple of times before I drove off, then I didn't hear it again. Maybe while the exhaust was cold something was loose? Also- I am of the impression that all of the doo-dads on this one are in-fact stock. Anyone see anything amiss? Finally- I accidentally drove a Cayman S they had on hand as well, and it was pretty confusing as it was equally nice yet totally different. I'd plan on taking whatever I get to a great many track days, and so anyone with advice I am all ears. |

when i ordered my m2 i priced out a cayman s with all the options to match the m2 and the cayman s was about 20k more (CAD), the m2 also gave me a backseat which was a nice selling point for the wife. needless to say i have an m2 now.

Porsche Cayman S
here is a used cayman s with a few more miles in FL. i dont think their price is bad, not sure id pay that much for one with the stripes tho or dct. never heard clanking, doo dads look stock if you are really planning on doing a lot of track time and set on doing it in a $50k+ car id go with the cayman s in manual. i bought the m2 and used the leftover money on a miata+ a boatload of upgrades and a trailer. m2 is a great summer daily and i dont feel bad about beating up the miata on the track. Oh geeeez, those strip stickers are a deal breaker for me......
Also remember the cayman s makes less power but is much much lighter & mid engined.....and has only two seats |

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. Yes, I realize the bias will be strong here but I'll get the same at the Porsche forums.
The stripes are loud. But the CF spoiler, mirrors and winglets are tasty. I suppose the stripes could be pulled. But my 3 and 6 year Olds seem to think they make it very cool. |

If you take out the rear seats for track days, out of the M2. You would have 2 seats and it would also be lighter |

If this is your 3rd car / "fun car" and you don't need the 2 extra seats, I think the CaymanS is a no-brainer.

Opinions are going to be heavily weighted toward the M2, as you obviously already know. Ask yourself this: Are you looking for a track car that you occasionally drive on the street or a street car that you occasionally drive on the track? Is this your daily driver or do you have a 2nd vehicle? I think that day in and day out, the M is going to be easier to live with as a daily driver street-mobile that you sometimes take to the track. If you have a Golf, Camry, minivan, SUV (insert random daily driver here) and you are really just taking the M2/Porsche out on the occasional sunny weekend and to the track, then the balance may tip towards the Porsche, in my mind. Good luck! Either way, yours is a good problem to have! |

It is meant to be a fun car. I have my non fun car for daily.
It's unfortunate that I drove the damn Cayman. The M2 is ready now. The Cayman I will need to search for the one with the right specs. This is America- I demand satisfaction now. |

wont encourage one or the other, but as far as price with all the cf bits and the MPE, then that's not a bad price with DCT. i think brand new you're looking at over mid 60k with DCT, cf winglets front and side, cf spoiler, stripes, MPE, exec package. i can't tell if there's a cf diffuser, but that'll be another 1k minimum as well if it does.
of course, negotiating 101 tells us never to accept the asking price lol, so i'd definitely push for lower. also, if the previous owner had already gotten xpel done, then you're good to go. also, MPE is decently loud...did you drive with the valves open (through the bluetooth controller) AND in sport+ ? that rattling you're hearing is common for the MPE on cold start. there's several threads about it, some can live with it, others have tried different things to get rid of it. I wasn't clear before- you CAN get one, but it is an ala carte option called PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring). It does some other stuff too, but at its heart is a mechanical limited slip. Problem is very few people order it that way, as truthfully if you weren't going to track it you'd be hard pressed to miss it.
