Rear Fog Light Mod For US Spec Cars

Didn't see this anywhere on our forum so i thought i'd add it here.

Long story short, all M2's come with rear fogs built in, but they've been coded out in US spec cars for legal reasons.

This write up will show you how to get the rear fog light function back.

This requires 2 things to be done.

1. Coding

2. Replacing or Modifying your headlamp switch

The coding for this modification is mandatory. Purchasing a european headlamp switch is not.

Optional part number for Pre-LCI cars: 61319393943

Purchase link:

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...319265299~geb/

Note: If your car is an LCI you need part# 61316847520. The pre-LCI switch i listed above will NOT work with LCI cars.

Purchase link: https://www.fixparts-online.com/en/B...?item=18472280

Depending on when you are reading this, the LCI part may or may not be available in the US yet.
Meaning you will either have to buy one from oversea's or simply do the DIY modification for now.

For those of you replacing the switch:

Unplug the old one and replace with the new one. Now go to the coding section below.

Modifying the existing button

You don't have to take anything out or apart if you're just modifying the button. Simply take a plastic trim removal tool and place it to the left of the bottom fog button you're trying to modify and pry it out like so:

Them just shave the 3 plastic teeth down and pop it back into place.

Now you're ready to code

Optional coding if you'd like the rear fogs used as welcome lights:

REM / 3063 LceLampMapping 2 / MAPPING_NEBELSCHULSSL_L_PART_OF_WL = soft_on

REM / 3063 LceLampMapping 2 / MAPPING_NEBELSCHULSSL_R_PART_OF_WL = soft_on

Euro Switch Coding (for those of you replacing the entire switch)

FEM_BODY > 3064 LCECONFIGURATION > LCE_BEL_LIN_VAR > BEL_FLC_NSL (for cars WITHOUT front fogs)

FEM_BODY > 3064 LCECONFIGURATION > LCE_BEL_LIN_VAR > BEL_FLC_NSW_NSL (for cars WITH front fogs)

And that's it! You're all done. Now turn them on and get out of the car to look and make sure they're working.

Note: Headlights must be set to auto or turned on manually

Here's where the fogs are located on a pre-LCI car:

and here's where they will be on an LCI car:

You should see a yellow dash light illuminate when they are on:

Congrats on your new fogs. Enjoy fucking with tailgaters and not getting rear ended in bad weather.

correct. they're the same lights that are used for the 'brake force display' in the US.

you can code one (or both) of them on as fogs.

in europe i believe they only use one (drivers side).

i'm going to code both on and use it as a "get off my ass" button for tailgaters.

There's a good thread on the F30 forum. Our mod is almost exactly the same. the vent trim just comes off differently (more easily from the looks of it).

http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=877278

This is free and quick. The only thing I don't really like is that the headlights have to be on for the rear fogs to work.

The existing rear fogs on our cars can also be coded to be come on with the courtesy lighting that comes on when you hit unlock on the fob.

I am interested in this because I am tired of tapping brakes at them.

Yeah I don't like that either. Trying to find a coding solution.

Edit:

Doesn't look like it's possible. Headlights don't have to be in the on position though. They can be set in auto mode and the fog button will still work, only it will turn on the headlights as well when you press it. Not a big deal to me.

Just curious... anyone know what option would fill the blank above the rear fog switch?

Funny you mention that. I just recently started using auto mode. 2 days ago, just for the heck of it (stuck in traffic), I hit the fog button and they came on. Then I noticed the headlights came on as well.

Work with LCI?

Anyone know if this particular switch will work with the adaptive LED headlights on '18 LCI?

If the stock part # for an LCI and a pre-LCI, that would point to a big yes. Or just mod your existing switch if you don't mind the blank. That's an expensive decal if you go with a new part.

IT WILL NOT WORK FOR THE LCI!!!

I bought that switch for my 2016 M235i. I traded the M235i in for my 2018 M2 and crossed my fingers that the switch would work; it didn't. They changed the way the switch mounts to the dash.

According to Realoem you need part# 61316847520

In the meantime, I just modded the stock switch.

Quick question: does the euro switch and coding just allow fogs to "work" when needed, OR can they code to work when brakes are applied in normal use.

Some years ago, we had the 128M Sport, got the switch changed for rear fogs, and they got them to work nicely with brake application.

That's what I really want. I am just not tooooo concerned for those behind me---am weary of people not watching what they are doing here---and any extra safety at the back end, is most welcome.

Anyone know??? Thanks all...

In the US they are used as brake force display lights, meaning they will light up under heavy braking.
You can code them to flash instead if you prefer that.
I'm not aware of any coding to have them just work as normal brake lights.

Thank you....no problem. Having them available on rainy dark nights, fog and snowy conditions is just fine. Well worth cost and coding issues.

Personally, I am even in favor of the wing rear reflectors staying stock. Being seen at night is a huge factor here.

Hey andrewc89 - did you swap the rear tails for Euro version too? Just wondering if there is anything different about them other than the blinker/indicator being orange instead of red. I'm thinking about switching to the Euro ones for this (I strongly dislike red indicators as I think they can be confusing to others) and maybe selling my US-spec LCI lights.

Also, anybody have a part number for a good reverse LED? The LCIs still use a bulb there...

Yes, mine are the euro versions with yellow indicators. It's the one and only difference between the euro and US lights as far as I know. If you have an LCI already it should just be a 100% plug and play swap.

Here's the LED's i put in the reverse lights:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They are polarity specific so if they don't work just flip them 180 degrees

They're not road legal. No idea why. Ask the DOT.
