My oil cost me $52 total + shipping because I send the old oil back to FCP Euro for a refund every oil change. It ends up being like $5/L, and goes down from there with each additional oil change.

I have been buying my Castrol Edge 0W-40 from Walmart. 1 5qt jug and 2 single quarts for around $44. That's the best I've found so far.

Just get two 5qt for around $50, and next time get the one 5qt. Sometimes they go on sale for around $23

Wow. At the Advance near me just the conventional Pennzoil stuff is $32. The synthetic was almost double.

You can't compare Canadian oil prices with US.

US definitely has better deals on products, especially on shipping.

Just looked into this, that's amazing. Gonna have to get on that life. I use Duralast Gold brake pads for the same reason.

How are they making money?

I'm confused. According to their warranty, why wouldn't it be free (minus shipping)?

Best deal for Canadians is Motomaster Formula 1 synthetic 5w40 5L for $27 (on sale). It's made by Wakefield (ie Castrol) and actually meets A3/B4, MB 223.1, VW 502/505 and Porsche A40 specs. It appears to be exactly the same as Castrol's own 5w40 that also meets LL01. It's possible that they excluded the BMW spec from the Motomaster due to licensing between BMW and Castrol?

It is always been this way since as early as I can remember. BMW oil is not BMW brand oil but it is usually Mobil 1 (formally Castrol) rebranded with BMW logos.

I'm sure there is some sort of corporate subsidies between Mobil and BMW
that carry on big savings to the consumers.

In NYC a quart at the dealership is $7 while in stores like autozone that same Mobil One
is $9 to $10.

The cheapest I've found is BJ where you can buy a box of 6 one quart Mobile 1 bottles of oil for $26 plus taxes and bottle fees = $30
so it works out $5 a bottle. Then again the $80 annual BJ membership has to be accounted for.

BMW doesn't deal with Castrol anymore they're with Shell now. Just asked the part vendor when I bought the oil.

How are they making money?
Here's my best guess...

- Warranty covers a per-car, per-owner basis
- Cars are always being bought and sold
- There are always new cars coming out
- Prices tend to be slightly higher for some products
- Each product has a return distribution
- Products with a low return distribution can be priced to subsidize products with a higher return distribution
- Combine and optimize all of the above just right, and you've got a viable pricing scheme
- Increase the volume of buyers and you're greatly increasing the total revenue

I've been thinking about it as a combination of how coupon companies and free perks at a dealership work...

Coupon companies exist because not everyone uses the coupon.
Dealership loaner vehicles, drinks, food, fancy furniture, free car wash, etc. exist because they're subsidized by vehicle sales and repairs.

I'd love to have FCP Euro message me if I've got the right idea

It is free minus shipping the oil back to them
I've seen their ads encouraging this but I didn't think anyone seriously did it. So pay return shipping and you always get free oil?

What I have calculated is that me doing my own oil change equates to about $78 with tax. That's 8 bottles/quarts at about $8 a quart plus the cost of a filter with new drain plug and washer $12.

My local BMW dealership has oil changes for 3 series at $84.99 which comes out to $89 with taxes. Its only a $12 difference for something that I do every 6-8 months.
