Hit in parking lot: no brains no headach! (long post)
When parking at my work place, I usually look for either an end or a parallel spot. When parking in an end stall, I always get as close to the curb as I possibly can (similar to most other enthusiasts).
Yesterday, I couldn't find a good parallel spot to park in, but I did find a decent end parking stall that gave me about 3 feet of room between my car and the parking line. I have been parking there for years now. Around lunch time, a co-worker came to me and said that there was a blue truck parked ontop of my hood. I have only had my car for about one month and have been teased by friends about other people hitting my new car (very funny eh). so this time I shrugged it off. but then another co-worker came to me and told me the same story. I decided to go out to the parking lot and check it out. While i was walking down to the lobby of my workplace, terrible visions were passing though my mind, but I kept telling myself, this can't be. just in case I stopped at the security desk to ask what could be done if someone hit my car in the parking lot. When I asked the security guard about this, he imediatly asked if I owned a black bmw 335i coupe, I said..Yes, why? The security guard told me he was looking for me and he had some bad news for me. my heart stopped and I felt like crap. the security guard told me he had all the information and pictures I needed to file a report. He explained to me that there was a witness and this is how it was explained to him. A women was eating her lunch in her ford ranger, when she fininshed, she stepped out of her truck and walked away to go back to work. While she was walking away from her truck it began to roll backward out of the stall she was parked in, and straight into my new BMW 335i. The witness gave this information to the security guard along with his phone number if I had any questions for him. I go out to my car and sure enough, there is a ford ranger bumper shoved into my right front bumper and headlight. i am so angry that someone can be so neglegent to allow there car to wonder off. I then call the police and ask for assistance to find the person responsible for this. about 40 min. later the police show up and run the license plate and give me a name. I then give the name to the security guard and they search for a phone number. I go up to her office, and she is there. I asked her if she owned a blue ford ranger and she reply's, yes. I then proceed to tell her that her truck has rolled into my front bumper. the lady then starts to go outside to verify what I have told her. I asked her if she had her keys and she does not reply. I asked her a second time and she says, no.... I leave them in the truck. Im thinking, this lady is STUPID! she leaves her keys in her truck and does not set her emergency brake or put the damn thing in gear! I got her insurance info, called them and let them know what happened. Her insurance company told me I had to get an estimate at a location they choose, after that I can take that quote to any auto body shop I choose. I took it in today and the quote was a little over 2k. The bumper was only 270 bucks. if I wanted to get an m-tech bumber, wouldn't this be the time to do this? how much do they run by the way? Thanks, James

Thats cheap for a bumper.. To repaint mine it was $5XX, and now it got hit again and needs a new one at $1k painted. The lights are probably the most expensive part... Good luck but check again about the bumper, make sure you only take it to a BMW authorized body shop, its not your fault so why should you be punished with a cheap body shop.

An estimate at a place *her* insurance company chooses? That's utter bullshit, *you* should bring it to the dealer and have them take a look at it. They can determine if anything else was damaged, just to make sure. Did you let your insurance company know? If not, you should let them know. Let them deal with the lady's insurance company. Yeah, this would be a good time to get the M Aerodynamic Kit. Tischer BMW sells them. I would get the complete kit. ugh
That sucks, hope the repair goes well. It was probably low enough speed that nothing is damaged other than the cosmetics: bumper & light & quarter panel, etc. Your car should drive perfectly.
One note: It really looks to me like you're illegally parked. Yellow curb = don't park. Look in the background, the 'islands' have yellow curb on the OUTER edge, and non-yellow curb on the INNER (valid) edge. I'm guessing nobody really cares, and therefore nobody has complained, etc. But just a heads up, I really think you're illegally parked. -mike |

I parallel parked along the curb and stepped out of my car. As i walk away from my car, i see a person backing up and he backs up a bit too much. The truck's tires were on top of my headlights/hood~ |

engine running nevertheless and the other car shouldn't be going around the parking lot on its own Worse that can happen is for the police to give him a ticket assuming they even can since this is a private parking lot and from the sounds of it they didn't care. To the OP - you're lucky she didn't move her car and she was seen and you caught her. It saved you a lot of gray hairs from the aggravation and the anxiety of your damaged car. Regarding the estimate, tell her insurance that you are taking it wherever you want for the estimate as it is your right in the law Good luck with the repairs. |

what a low blow, no matter the magnitude of the crash, it still sucks to have your 335i crashed in any way, in particular so new.

Another pic of the parking lot (wider shot)
Here is another view (wider shot) of the parking space. It does look like I am parked in a yellow zone, but the yellow paint ends just before my front tire.
The woman did apologize, and seemed sincere. I just hope it does not happen again! I got my estimate, the shop quoted me 2K to replace the headlamp and replace/paint the front bumber. I am going to take it to Kuni BMW and get a quote from them next. I feel I should take it to a BMW shop opposed to any other shop. what do you guys think?
