Winter tire size on 788M M Performance Coilovers
Tried searching this but couldn't find a solid answer. When I bought the car I switched over the stock PSS to 763M wheels and put PA4 winters same size as stock (245/35 front and 265/35 rear) on the 788M wheels. No rubbing with the winters but it sure is close.
I plan to install the M Performance coilovers soon and I'm almost certain the winters will rub. Question is anyone lowered with the 788M wheels on winters can confirm a PA4 size that will work on the front no rub? I was thinking of going down to 235/35. Couldn't find specs on the 235/35 for tread width, only section width. Also hearing these might be discontinued. Trying to avoid replacing the rears but am up for suggestions on other brands. Adjusting the coilovers on the front end is always on option, but don't want to deal with alignment. Also want to avoid the fender liner heat gun fix. Hoping someone has some insight. I'm trying to prepare early and when winter tires go back in stock later in the fall. Not using spacers right now till I sort this out. Thanks. |

Should of done more research on my end. Definitely limited winter tire options if sticking to stock size tires and wheels. Decided I don't want to size down due to the stretched look. I'll just see where it rubs with my current winters after lowering and do the fender mod in that spot. Saves me money too. Hoping it will also help me run spacers on the summer wheels and tires, assuming the rub is in that same area. Will share any findings.

Why would they rub @ stock sizes on 788M, even with the coilovers?
Another option is 4 front wheels and 245 square but that doesn't address your concern I suppose. |

Finally had a chance to install the MPC and put on my winter wheels. As expected it is rubbing with PA4 stock size due to the larger dimensions of the tire. Height is per BMW spec 595mm front and a little lower on the rear at 597mm. That's without the 75kg x 2 on the front seats. Will lift the front one full turn to account for this, getting it closer to 598mm. I'm going to just leave it as is and let it wear out the liner. I can barely hear the rub and looking at the fender it doesn't seem too bad. You gotta pay to play right? Probably save my 10mm spacers for when I go back to summer wheels. Figured I'd post incase anyone was wondering or in the same situation.

I sure wish I'd seen this thread before buying my Michelin PA4 tires off of Tire Rack. Mounted them on a set of 788Ms and I rub a bit in the front every time I back out of my driveway when the combination of suspension travel and turned wheels is just right/wrong.
Didn't occur to me that the stock wheels and stock tire sizes wouldn't clear just because winter tires are chunkier than summers. Didn't expect there to be that little clearance in there!

What would you go with instead, though, 235/255? I bought stock PA4 and plan to use a heat gun on the liner to try to get a little more clearance. |

I didn't rub on stock PA4 tires before I lowered the car. It's does for some and not others. I did change my mind and did the fender liner heat gun mod. Posted on another thread but should have updated here. It cleared enough space to even get 10mm spacers on with no rub. So easy and definitely worth it.

No idea what I'd do actually. Not drive it in the winter? Buy all-seasons instead of winter tires? I don't know - can't go down in wheel size because of the ginormous brakes and I don't know if other tire sizes would stretch or not? Also didn't look to see what bmw actually recommends - I may buy a heat gun and try the mod mentioned in this thread. Need to look and see where it's rubbing first

That's crazy that 245s also rub. I have 255 winters and they rub on low speed full lock. I've kinda learned to live with it and is because the winter tires are definitely chunkier tires. I was thinking of downsizing to 245s but am wondering if even that will help

Are there other tires that fit OK and are good? PA4's seem to be on backorder right now.

I know what those Pirellis are (something in between SottoZero 3 and Michelin PA4 in terms of winter performance). Really interested in some first-hand feedback on those Contis and how they compare to the PA4s. * BMW recommended winter size is 235/35/19 all around. |
