best M car imo would be:

E46 appearance
E92 sound
F80 interior, power curve, and refinement
E36 steering

What is the greatest M car of all time?

So a few things. First off, this video doesn't even offer an opinion. If it did that would've been stupid because it's a subjective question/statement.

Further to that point, it's subjective, I never owned one, but I do love me a Z3MC others might like another M variant, 1M, M2, M3, M5.....theres really too many to actually answer the question as there will never be a consensus. What's worse is the video goes off on a design tangent about future design and sound, BLAH BLAH BLAH......

I had driven my M5 or another car for 2 weeks straight, hadn't driven the M4 and was eager to use it. Took the M4 this morning and before I reached work I was like meh. The V10 engine is just intoxicating nothing compares. Even though the M4 handles so much better, I'd rather be in the M5, unless its a nice top drop day.

Sad that the future is cars without a truly soulful engine.

There is no doubt the M4 is faster, likely the torque, a bit of the weight, a lot of the new tires vs the trash run flats the M5s times were recorded on.

However the M4 has squirrelly bouncy rear suspension that imo, makes it slightly worse for us amateur track day goers.

I Like them both, but like you, I'll take the M5 and V10 as long as I can keep it going. Excellent easy to drive track machine, and it really does Keep up with the M4. Fantastic M car.

If only we had a chance to see the cancelled competition version with the supercharged V10.

E30, E46, E39, E92, E60, E82. I'll throw in the F87 for being the last BMW in their entire porfolio to deliver the smiles the E-chassis cars did.

Personally I think the E46 takes the #1 spot.

My choices are based solely my emotional response to the hard driving experiences and the aesthetics combination as compared to their competitors or other BMWs at the time.

E39 World's best at the time. I love the combination of performance and great looks. I did have Dinan S2, Dinan suspension, exhausts, BBS wheels installed. My black beauty turned heads because of its track performance capabilities and the stance with the BBS wheels. Steve Dinan took me for a performance test drive that was a ride of a life time. Clearly my favorite M5 out of 3, E34, E39, E60 all sold.

E46 M3CLS by reputation from what I've read. Got to drive M3s a few times and I'm sure the M3CLS was outstanding.

E87 M2C Sheer joy and fun to drive hard or DD.

I've owned 8 BMWs and my 2002 (sold), E39 M5 (sold) and E87 M2CS are my choices.

A bit odd that the Z3M and Z4M are left out of these conversations regularly, especially given the lauded S54 and coupe platforms.

Truth be told I haven't had a go in a modern M car since the original M2, and the electronic steering needed work to match the hydraulic steering rack feel.

My opinion on this...

i especially love the Z4M Coupe (Z3M not so much)----but the reason why they are left out is that they simply don't represent the idea of a car that kicks total ass AND is able to transport kids, family, and be an 'only' car that has the capability of being practical enough.

I do realise the M1 is the 'original' M car, however for all intensive purposes the E28 M5 was the REAL full production M car and it was a family sedan hiding a heart of a wolf. Before that it was the (PRE-M) 3.0 CSL, 2002 Turbo, E12 M535i---all of which were also very practical cars that could be used as 'family cars'.

When i think of the greatest M cars, for me they have to serve that dual purpose. It's what characterizes the 'greatest' M cars.

Excellent point! With a kiddo now I have been itching for a 4-door performance car, the likes of which BMW used to produce regularly. My current appetite for maintenance leaves an E30 or E46 M3 touring as a pipe dream.

I loved my 1M more than anything but the E90 M3 that replaces it was required for new kids.... fast forward and the F80 M3 is my daily and by far exceeds expectations of the others (other than the special feeling the 1M provided).

For sound and that grunt. I am going to have to just say the V8 and V10 NA > any of the turbo M cars. This is the reason why I picked up the 2012 M3 2 weeks ago.
Don't know of any North American M combo better than M4 GTS + E90 M3.

Theoretical choice between that pairing or E92 M3 GTS + pristine E39 M5 would require xanax.

I have used my 1M as our primary family car even since my son was born 4 years ago! It's been great. That lucky squirt has never known anything else!! Lol.

The F80 M3 is a wonderful car but kids can be raised in coupes too!!

We have to have rear facing seats in Aus for kids up to 2 - coupe was extremely impractical in this scenario!

We did that too. Had no issues. Just have to buy the right child seats!

I have no doubt but Australia uniquely seems to favour a "top strap" on their car seats making the rear facing seat not only impractical but almost dangerous in a coupe... hence the e90 switch which I did not regret.
