Slow leak from tire - to patch or not to patch
Torn here.
I have a slow leak coming from a small nail dead center of the tire. My go to tire shop will patch it for $50. BMW will not patch, so that's $500 for a new tire and a few days of waiting because they're slammed. Tires only have 5K miles, still have another year of good life left. I've patched tires on every car I've ever owned. Any issue if I YOLO and patch? |

I would patch it for sure. Discount tire here in San Diego will patch it for free.
I have patched tires in all my mustangs and my AMG with no issues. If its not a track car/tire then I would just patch it. |

BMW SA's spiel raised an eyebrow, so wanted some validation that there's nothing wrong with patching a PSS on the M2.
And yes I don't track and confirmed it's only $25. |

Plug for MPSS on my rear tire was $25 at BMW dealer.
Same issue, it had a nail. Had the guy plug it without removing the wheel so I wouldn't have to retorque w/ torque wrench. I hate those pneumatic torque guns and didn't want the wheel to get scuffed. Haven't had any issues for the past 6 months. |

That would be a plug, right? Not sure how you patch from inside without removing the tire. I agree though, i was cringing the whole time with them tryin to remove the tire and the torque gun

Plugs are adequate if you can't bear removal, and certainly better than just leaving it to leak. Best is an inside patch (and only if not tracking it). Make sure to ask beforehand if they can handle our width/series of tires. Just heard of somebody getting inside patch done at Walmart for $30, but personally I'd want it done where I get the rest of my tire work done so they don't scuff the rims.

America's tire patches for free. I've done this numerous times, never had an issue.
And don't buy tires from the dealership. There's just no need to overpay like that. Go to a proper tire shop.

Free patching is news to me. Around here, they'd just be patching tires for free all day

$50 to patch a tire? Do you get a massage in the waiting room with that?
Absolutely patch it. Take it to Discount Tire (if they are in your area), they fix flats for free - whether or not you bought the tires there. No massage though.

I also got a screw on my tire about 3 weeks ago. A buddy lent me his tire repair kit and I just plugged it. Been checking tire pressure and still holding at 35 psi. I've patched and plugged many tires over the years on my other BMW and have had no problem. Of course, I only patch the tire if it's repairable as in the leak/hole is in the contact patch of the road. If on edge of contact patch or side of tire, I replace it.

Yes I recall if you bought the tires at Discount Tire, they'll patch for free.
And yes, a plug patch is best, a plain patch 2nd, and a plug 3rd and my recommendation only in circumstances the other options aren't available. Probably some BMW and other tire shops are hesitant to patch a PSS or other speed rated tire because it technically loses its advertised speed rating. Can you say liability if you then have a blow out at 120 mph??? PS: At age 17-18 I worked at a full service gas station and patched/plugged/fixed many a tire. You should have seen the conditions of the tires/rims folks wanted patched or plugged. Plus I guarantee that old equipment couldn't handle todays 20" rims.

Doesn't matter where you bought the tires - repairs are free. BRILLIANT marketing. Almost guarantees the puncture victim returns for their next tire purchase.

Same here many moons ago, worked on weekends only. That's when I learned to replace a flat, patch/plug tires, change oil, replace brakes/rotors, and wrench a little. Also enjoyed washing windows of pretty gals.
