Punctured radiator...

Oops. Stone through the lower middle grill punctured the main engine radiator and lost all the coolant..

8 hours getting recovered back home from just 1 hour drive away.

Car off the road for a week or three now as post covid all the workshops are crazy busy.

£420 bmw rad plus 3hrs to fit it. (Not by bmw)

Might invest in some zunsport grills...

Wagner and mishimoto radiators come with optional rock protector screens too I believe.. would've been a good opportunity to upgrade

Uograde the charge cooler circuit maybe with serious boost. But engine circuit not so sure..

Looking into it the upgrades are all for the low temp charge cooler circuit not the high temp engine circuit..

So far, I've only come across one aftermarket main engine radiator for the S55

https://www.catune.co.uk/single_prod...faWQ9OA==.html

It also seems they offer other coolers, as well, such as the charge cooler, oil cooler and auxiliary left and right coolers

That ruined the day. Any idea how big the rock was? I only have 700 miles on mine, but I’m seeing similar post so I am going to start looking for screens. I hope you have success getting it back on the road with some protection.

I had an opportunity to take a look at the M4 GT4 cars up close and personal. They use a wire mesh similar toTHIS just behind the grills. Its virtually invisible inless you get right up close and you're looking for it. At this mesh size it doesn't hamper airflow but you can search "hardware cloth" in a number of different mesh sizes if you think 2x2 is too big or small.

More than the day. We were on the way to the beautiful and historic city that is Oxford for a £600/night 3 day trip for my wife's birthday.

Still got there a day late, took her A35 instead

No marks on the lower plastic grill so 10mm or so max size to get through the grill and still have the impact energy to puncture the rad.

I had this happen to my charge cooler. I took it to BMW with the complaint of low intercooler fluid. I intended for them to check the intercooler for internal leaks. Instead, they pressure tested the systems, and changed my main radiator under warranty like morons. Afterwards, they forgot to fill the intercooler circuit. I filled it myself.

And it still leaked!

Finally I found the leak myself and replaced the charge cooler myself.
It wasn't too great; your leak is way worse. Mine would just spray coolant on my windshield.

same thing happened to me last week. Only difference is it was my left radiator that was punctured.

Not sure if this would apply to people outside the US, but my insurance actually covered the incident. I did have to pay the deductible but I wanted the peace of mind of getting the repair done at a BMW dealership for record history sake.

here is a picture of the puncture with a jet of coolant coming out of it:

Mine looked like that too, bright blue coolant all over my trainers!

I could have claimed on my insurance too but the deductables are 65% of the repair cost and then i have to declare the claim for the next 5 years which puts up the premiums come renewal time. Not worth it for me.

When you ordered your Zunsport grill set did you have to request that you didn't want the small logo on the center grill?

That's odd, I don't recall ordering "no logo" and I received one but it was unattached.
