Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connected Smart Tires & App Tested on M2 Competition

Joe Achilles tests the new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connected Smart tires on his M2 Competition.

The first application for these new tires are on the BMW M2 CS as OE tires. See more tire info here: https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1731119

What's the point the car comes with TPMS that allows you to see both psi and temperature.

This doesn't benefit the consumer; it only benefits Michelin.

Purchasing additional TPMS sensors for extra set of track wheels offers more flexibility in choice of tires. Ofcourse if you want the latest and greatest tire and the Michelin track app, it makes sense. Upon watching Joe's video it is somewhat advantageous to get real world temp info on the circuit to make adjustments on the fly. I don't know if the tire pressure PSI and temp screen can stay on while driving and be easy to read as the Michelin color coded system.

The TMPS sensor has a weight to it. This can also go on a car that is not BMW, like your Honda CRX or some other honda product that does not come with any features of drivability. I think I see their point.

Unless there are electronics and mechanisms that can increase/decrease tyre pressures including lowering/raising temperature of the tyres on the fly with the app, I do not see the benefits of such systems. As some has mentioned, the car itself already has TPMS, seems like a repeated feature that is not necessary.

The TPMS refresh rate is very poor compared with what Michelin offers in the video. If you track before, you will know the tire temperature is a very big factor on how high performance tire performs. Though there's a good rule of thumb that you warm up for two laps, being able to tell when your tire is at optimal temperature band and push for a hot lap can be somewhat valuable.

Just seems like a gimmick to me. When on track all you need to know is 'do I need to stop and adjust pressures'. When on the track, the BMW system is sufficient enough to tell you pressures are approaching cautionary levels. Failing that, your hands and arse are pretty good sensors for tire slip.

Having a system tell you in real-time what the pressures are is somewhat irrelevant unless you are competing in professional racing and have a team at hand who can provide your real-time analysis and feedback on a per corner basis (aka, F1).

As a driver at a track day, the only thing you can do is slow down, back off or stop and adjust pressures. If the current technology doesn't do enough to equip you... well, need I say more. For track days, even timed laps, this just comes across as a massive gimmick designed to sell more tyres (and at a higher price).

Pretty sure every tire already has this app. Called "wear bars".

You're obviously always alone and prohibited to have fun at a track day... I don't think Joe was trying to set a lap record nor pretend to be a race driver ... Even though he isn't a professional, he's pushing his car above the average pleb i'd say

You can code a BMW to show you the real time tire temp in iDrive.

Do you mean for cars which don’t have the tire pressure/temp display by default? Or do you mean something more than what my M3 is already showing?

Most BMWs do not have the feature by default, so I'm referring to those. I'm sure it's just unlocking the same system your M3 uses.

TPMS location temperature is only a relative of tire carcass temperature. TPMS is a bulk temperature of the air inside the tire cavity along with the wheel temperature and is heavily influenced by brake heat input to the wheel structure (especially up front). Carcass tire temperature is a much different measurement, and this sensor allows capture of the continual transient temperature profile of the carcass itself right on the back side of the tread layer.

A simple heat transfer analysis will show how different measuring at these two locations are in a real time process. To put it in the simplest of terms (without delving into conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer needed to be accounted for in the analysis), it's analogous to measuring the temperature of the burner itself in a gas fireplace as the gas level is cycled higher and lower versus a room temperature sensor mounted 3 feet in front of the fireplace.

Whether said real time transient tread/carcass temperature is useful as used within the Michelin app or not is another question of course.

As to TPMS measured air pressures...at a recent time trial event on a very fast course that was about 82 seconds long, in the M2C I had the iDrive pressure and temperature screen displayed as I was curious how it would correspond to my measured pressure (I have both a Longacre and an Intercomp bourdon tube type gauge) after each run.

Due partly to massive heat input from the brakes, the pressures up front especially need to be constantly bled for at least the first four runs on course even when starting out low to begin with (31 psi). Anyway, immediately after the first run, the TPMS readout showed 32 psi LF and 34 psi RF, and get this with LF at 144F and RF at 145F; both started with exactly 31 psi measured and shown on the TPMS. My direct pressure measurement showed the LF at 37 psi and the RF at 38 psi (the course is somewhat biased to turning left, i.e. loading the RF the most).

After measuring them and readjusting to 34 psi for the next run (RE-71R btw), I checked the TPMS screen to see what it showed, and it was unchanged. Hence, not only was it way off on the pressure at the end of the first run, but even after the adjustment, it hadn't (yet) changed. I think there is some significant buffering in the pressure readout when it sees a wild change in temperature like occurs in this case where over 80 seconds time the TPMS location measured temperature went from about 75F to over 140F. I didn't bother looking at it for the rest of the event since I felt it was useless...direct, accurate pressure measurement immediately after each run was far more useful.

On track, the only thing I display on the idrive screen are tire temps and pressures. True the refresh rate is only a few times per lap, but I can only spare my attention so much during a lap anyway (traffic, difficult sections etc.). The phone always displays the lap timer.

The idrive display as someone mentioned does allow me to work with any brand of tire as long as I know their optimum pressure and temps hot.

A gimmick, and completely irrelevant as I never run Cup 2’s on track, they have got to be one of the worst performance per dollar track tire out there.

Exactly. Maybe the Cup 2R might be a heavy hitter against other track tires, but nobody can find out since it only comes in a couple of sizes (GT3RS I think); other than that, many other tires easily out perform the Cup2 on track.
