M2 vs Golf R
No hating but hear me out. In the UK, specs are approx:-
Golf R 300 odd HP AWD 0-62 in about 4.8 is it? RRP ã30k M2 365 odd HP RWD only I'm convinced for the UK RHD 0-62 in about 4.4 RRP ã45k tbc Now this is no problem to me, I doubt I'd ever get the golf. BUT it's receiving rave reviews and the M2 will cost 50% more and for UK weather I doubt the M2 will match a Golf R in the wet and snow which is lots of the time I guess this could be good as the M2 would remain more exclusive but this is some competition for the M2, nothing new of course the R has been about for a bit, but the M2 needs to be excellent!

Do you think the VW is going to be significantly lighter than the M2 or is the assumption that the AWD will equalize the 0-62?

I thought Golf R was an M235i competitor?
M235i 0-62mph in 4.8s.

I had an mk6 gti, now have a 235, and have sat and seen the new r in Detroit. I appreciate what the r can do, in the sense of being a classy and practical hatch with solid performance. The r would make a perfect second car for the m2, but on its own, it just isn't "special". getting into the 235 is more of an occurrence, the interior is very driver focused and the engine brings the car to life. The m2 will hopefully push that further.
The 36k price tag is a bargain, even at 40k it's still a hard to find anything with as much all around performance. But if I'm putting down that much money on a car, I want it to be special and the golf r doesn't really cut it. Then again, I'm the guy who would pick the 4c over the cayman any day of the week, even with the subpar performance and a dubious dealer network, just because it's a far more special piece of hardware. |

4.9 will be a non-starter for competing with the M2. M235i has hit 4.2s (8AT) on some tests to 60. The M2 should punch closer to 4 sec flat, then imagine a tune on that :P

Really can't compare the Golf R to the impending M2.
Golf R is an amazing piece of kit when chasing numbers, especially when modded but lacks any sort of feel and definitely doesn't have the same visceral experience that you get even from the slightly deadened m235i (electric steering and active sound pumped through your speakers) Golf R is a tool. Get in, get a job done. Get out. Brag. BMW, you smile walking up to it, cold start and smile some more, reverse and itch all the way to operating temps, plant it and smile more, grin and turn the DTC down one notch, get the ass out and a bit of wheelspin as you pull away. Get a properly naughty smile and turn it off completely and a little nerves set in and then you busy destroying a parking lot and some tyres. Then you smile when you park it off, lock it and it ticks away in appreciation of you appreciating. It's an experience. And now that the ///M Division is touching the m235i to make the ///M2, its going to be more of an experience, WAY more, i hope. Golf R is 4,9seconds to 100km/h m235i is 4,8seconds to 100km/h Just by the way. If you want to look at performance check the 100-200 timesheet. Then they become a little less incomparable. |

the Golf R is a much cooler car than the M235....but really won't be in the same class as the M2...IMO. The M2 will compete against the MK3 TT-RS, Cayman GTS, and the CLA45 AMG

The Golf R, WRX STi, and S3 will compete in the same pricing arena. For sound and raw performance they all will be fun all-wheel drive cars.
The M2, RS 5, new Cayman GT4 will complete in the luxury performance division with the M2 better the lower cost option among these 3. The M4 I suspect won't be besting the M2 for long and a shift in king of the "M" cars will move to the M2. |

Besides, never liked Mercedes while a VW with 300 PS is definitely something special...But of course it can only be compared with M235i - not with M2 when it arrives; this is more appropriated for the R400...

Same here, very interested in Golf R and I also have a 330 zhp like you do. What did you think? I'm only interested in manual though.
I think Chris Harris already compared M235i and R. He was impressed by R but preferred 235i. I don't t think the R is really an M2 competitor either unless you live in Greenland or the Nordic countries where AWD really helps. |

Horses for courses. They are slightly different classes, but can certainly be cross-shopped. I own previous versions- the 1M and the R32. The newest R has made pretty big strides over the R32, I expect a smaller jump in the 1M
The R is a Swiss army knife car- it does a little of everything, and does it well. If you imagine a spider chart with every area of car performance, space, comfort, dry performance, wet performance, economy, etc, the R is going to cover more area. On a tight wet road there is zero chance the BMW will follow it, ditto snow. The M2 will excel in a few areas: dry roads, driving enjoyment at lower speeds, at the autocross or track, etc. Much more mobile chassis if you like to go sideways- the R takes real effort to get drifting around, the 1M none at all. Thus the BMW will be a better tool to teach you to drive, and for me they way I drive ultimately more fun more of the time. Not all the time, though- curvy wet backroads, snow, etc the R takes it. The BMW takes the nod for me if I only had one car- more driving enjoyment. With the luxury of two cars I'd probably take the R (and SUV for people that hate SUVs) and something sportier like a Cayman/ 911 to cover more total area on the spider chart. No bad choices between these two, figure out what your mission is and forget the numbers- it's the hugely different feel that separates these cars, not the fraction of a second to 60 mph.

Agree Cayman GTS already probably superior, GT4 will be awesome and the Cayman that sticks it to the 911. I could love it just for that!
