Totally Annoying Carplay / iOS Bug

I suspect this is a bug with iOS and not with Carplay, but, it was too aggravating not to share. Here's the setup:

1) Driving and playing music from my phone, through Carplay.
2) Get a call from a friend. Accept the call, have conversation, park car.
3) End call and immediately shut car off, before Carplay can revert back to the music playing.
4) Result: Nothing obvious for about 10 seconds until I'm out of the car and walking into a store. Then, iPhone resumes playing the song I was listening to, prior to the phone call, at full volume, through the phone. Volume control will not work. Closed the music app in the phone and it's STILL playing! Double clicked the home button and shut down ALL apps. Music still blasting out my phone at full volume. People now staring. Shut the screen off, music still playing. Getting embarrassed. Had to hard reboot the phone to get it to shut up!

Did we ever get an answer on whether you can use google maps (or even waze)? It'd be worth the $300 to me just to be able to use google maps and have up to date traffic info. Imho the 'traffic info' feature even on late model cars is severely lacking.

I've got CarPlay in my 230i. Mostly I got it to help future proof the car. Apple is much more likely to keep improving CarPlay while iDrive will likely remain essentially the same for the life of the car.

I like the Apple maps and directions though it doesn't provide as much info as iDrive. I've found a couple of times that the BMW map didn't have an address that Apple map does. I like the very quick and seamless transfer of map search results from my iPhone Apple Maps to the car screen. It's very easy to switch back and forth between the two maps.

Siri works better than voice activations in iDrive.

I like the message notifications, not too distracting.

The quality of the audio through the CarPlay wireless connection (wifi) seems to be better than Bluetooth, it certainly a louder connection (don't have to turn up the iPhone nearly as much).

I haven't tried any other of the other available apps. You can't use Google Maps or Waze (may be later, fingers crossed).

Glad I got it though I'd also say that the cost is too high for what you get today.

I selected CarPlay with the hope it would be useful now but mostly at a bet the Apple & BMW will continue to improve the features and connectivity.

Got an email from BMW Canada. CarPlay is now available. Simply uninstall iPhone from car and CarPlay should be available.

I have not tried it yet. Will do next week.

How? I'm lost here. Don't you have to pay for it first and then install it some how?

Well but that was the case of Canadian vehicles correct?

That although it wasn't available, BMW Canada had informed that it would be at some point.

But BMW USA had not disclosed any info for USA Market.

I had emailed BMW Genius a couple times and every time they responded was that it wasnt available at the moment.

I just digged thru my last correspondence about it and sent them the info Canada provided and asked them when USA will do something similar.

I paid for CarPlay, but it was an early MY17 build.

Thats what I mean, when I started the thread it was because when I built my car, MY2017 was still not out, I built it based on the 2016 options, during the wait for an allocation I ended up with a 2017 build but it did not show CarPlay to be available at that time.

2017 USA cars that were built un July did not have CarPlay availability. But it was understood that the same situation happened to Canada cars but BMW Canada stated they would make it available down the line while USA kept saying it wasn't available at the time.

Works out to be $5/mo. over a 5 year loan. It's a selling point to the next buyer if nothing else.

I agree with you ! I installed a double din with carplay on an older car because I was mad at watching the old yellowish screen of the native GPS with only german highways on it...
... and I was really disappointed :
- very limited functions (only key Apple functions, not Google Maps, not Coyote, etc.)
- very bad Apple Map GPS !!!

In the same context, I am not really convinced by the "Connected Drive" options : useless, and so obsolete vs. current state of technology and also vs. competition (e.g. Tesla)

mirroring iphone ? NBT EVO ID6 ?

Would like to mirror my iphone screen to use Coyote, google maps, and read emails or see videos during traffic jams...

What is your best solution ?
- Apparently the bimmertech is low quality so not really recommended
- I have heard about upgrade of NBT EVO or ID6. Not 100% sure of what it exactly means concretely and how much it would cost ;-)

For apple devices, you can have Carplay with ID5 or ID6. Not sure whether you are speed-locked for video.

For other devices, you can use Miracast.
