I just got a response from the saying that they are currently working on the unlock and hoping to have a solution soon. Not sure what “soon” means.
Are the newer M3/4 affected by this as well?

That's been their blanket answer since the problem began. So "soon" means "no update, stop asking". When they get it, I can guarantee they will announce it and this thread will light up like a wild fire.

To my knowledge, all new s55 cars are affected.

Actually, most "tuners" do obfuscate when you ask them about this OBD2/bootloader tune issue because they don't want to discourage potential customers.

I could think of one right now that gave me an unintelligible answer but clarified that it's only available via bench flash, when I pushed them in a corner. I won't put them on front-street because I know it's beyond their control.

If you can prove otherwise, please share.

See the screenshots attached. The first is on their site under FAQ. The second one is from the M2C-specific info on their site. I'm not against them, but just imagine if I was a customer that had laid down the money to purchase this on the basis of what they advertise? I'd be kind of pissed off after paying for the OBD link cord and software only to find out I had to yank my ECU and send it out.

I'm not really sure why you think it's justifiable for a company to hide behind "everybody knows of this issue"? It's sloppy at best, or deceptive at worst. You can be a fanboy if that floats your boat, but honestly it makes me question the integrity of their business practice. I get that this may be an innocent mistake on their part, but I pointed this out many months ago and although they've updated the above attached website several times recently they haven't bothered to correct the blatantly the wrong information.

Is there a way to check and see if the DME is really locked? Some software version? I have a 2020 M2C so probably locked but wouldn’t mind checking anyway if possible.

The site makes it clear that it does NOT need to bench unlocked anymore. Is this for real, or have they not updated their site?

It's wrong on their site. It's confusing and misleading that they keep advertising this way.

But, according to some on this forum that's ok because "everyone knows this" lol.

To my understanding, if you patch the ECU/DME and then use BM3 to tune it.
The moment you decide to remove/lock the ECU/DME you need to patch the ECU/DME next time you want to tune it?

Im really hoping for a better solution then to remove the ECU/DME unit.
This won't be a big problem maybe but time consuming each time.

Or is this a good thing? For example when you need to service the car BMW shouldn't notice anything if they ain't starting to poke around

i don't know why people are waiting for the unlock when every shop can do a bench flash and get the tune. i did mine back in october

If by that, you mean they remove the ECU, ship it off, and then put it back in when they get it back, you're correct.

There are very few shops I would trust to take apart my car. And even if "any shop" can do it, fuck 99% of shops out there.

Something interesting I was told by carbahn tune shop as they bench flash and use their tune. Was looking at there options but told them I was looking for an E85 tune. They said they don't because using e85 eats up engine parts (cylinder heads, engine hardware etc) and they have been replacing whole engines. Is there any truth to this?? Aside from changing our spark plugs I was under the impression we are good to go on the s55. Anyone running e85 feel free to chime in

Some components in older generation vehicles weren't made to handle E85, this is not the case with the latest generation vehicles. I've also never heard of cylinder heads and engine hardware getting eaten up. I'm happily running E85 in both my M's.
