Euro Delivery in the Dead of Winter

Got a spot for a week 48 build on a M2C which puts euro delivery at Dec or Jan. I went for ED on my F80 in Oct 2015 and it was great, no snow and mild weather.

Is there anything to do in Dec/Jan if you don't want to deal with snow and miserable conditions? I could just go, pick up the car, drop it off and fly home if not.

Thanks!

Congrats. It can be freezy and also snowy that time of year. Order a winterset which is in general mandatory in Germany that time of year---->Autobahn.

Cheers

I just returned from my ED trip in my M2c. Weather was perfect, only rained for like a few hours and at that time I did not even take delivery of the car yet.

I would stay away from the Alps high elevation areas. Unless you want a filthy car, not sure they use salt there or put down sand on the roads. But with a new car seems not a good idea.

Personally I would avoid ED during winter, but that's just me.

October is fine, I did ED on my F80 in Oct 2015. My car won't be built until late Nov so to do ED I have to get it in Dec or Jan.

Is all of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy snowing during this time?

Although probably next to impossible to do, try and get your dealer to push the build date to something in the April-Oct time span. Otherwise I would do exactly as you proposed. I’d probably hit the museums again.

October can be a little touchy, I’m on ED now and deferred returning to Munich via Stelvio b/c of forcasted conditions although a few members here made it through a few days ago with no problems (see Ban M2C thread)

Yes October is fine, but I would avoid anything past October 15.

After October 15 you are required to have winter tires on your car.

My European Delivery was from October 1st to 8th. I just returned.

That's not how allocations work, either you take the one they have or you pass and wait. I think the Welt can hold the car for maybe a month or so after it's built but that's still in the dead of winter. They can't magically move up the build spot to now and I don't want to wait until April for another spot since I need to early trade my 17 M2 while the value is retained.

Understand, and suspected as much. Probably a company
thing as I was able to defer my Porsche Nov allocation/build
until May....Good luck, you will enjoy the car!

It can get snowy and icy. But it also can't. You should order the car with winter tires to be road legal in this period. What's holding you back from some frostbite?

Skiing is fun in winter, but I wouldn't take my new M2C in the snow and salt which is all over the roads. You can't predict the weather in Europe during winter. I would pick it up and give it back to them to ship home. Enjoy Munich during the holiday season, it's great.

Don't forget that you can't predict what the skill of other drivers or the reaction of certain drivers in different scenarios.

I just turned down an allocation for my ED for this very reason. I want to pick the car up at the end of May earliest so I can drive without winter tires and not worry about snow and ice.

I've got a week 47 build and there's no way in hell I'm not picking it up as early as I can.

Does anybody know the logistics of getting winter tires on the car for the ED?

There is a website where you reserve winter tires from. You need to reserve them well in advance.

Oh I see that on the website, looks pretty straightforward and the prices aren't atrocious.

Once you receive your confirmed European Delivery date I would schedule winter tires ASAP.

You can reserve them here.

Thanks looks like it might be a pain. I pick up my car on 1/18 which is a Friday, planned to drive around Germany, maybe Austria or somewhere 18, 19, 20 and I have a somewhat early international flight out of Munich at 11:40 AM on the 21st which means I probably have to be at the airport by 9:40 and drop off the car at 9 AM. The snow tire place doesn't open till 8 AM so it might be close.

I'm hoping it won't be snowing those 3 days i'm driving around.

The chances are that it won't be snowing. Ice and cold temperatures turn those summer tires into skids though.

Edit: I used to leave my summer tires on sometimes in winter, but I didn't leave the sheltered valley. Driving at any altitude with those summer tires in winter is asking for trouble.

Does it ice without snow there? I have very little to no knowledge about European climate

Oh yeah, ice can be anywhere in winter north of the Alps. Clear skies in winter often means ice on the roads, even at low elevations. That is why they use salt all over the place.

Ah ok so even if there's no snow but ice I have to rent M+S all season/winter tires, correct? Makes me not want to drive the car at all for the 3 days I'm there. May as well just rent a car, probably costs the same as renting the snow tires and saves a bunch of hassle.
