M2 rear-end damage (hit a barrier on a track day)

Hi, I've hit a barrier on a track day and managed to dent the rear panels and bent my rear axle on the passenger side. Wanted to know if anybody has done anything similar and what the repair costs would roughly be.

I don't know the full extent of the damage yet as I haven't taken the wheel off to have a look, but the car drifts to the right when going in a straight line. Thanks for the help.

I see you’re in the UK, bearing in mind the rear wheel alone you’re looking at £900, you’re probably looking at the best part of £5k and that would be assuming they repair the quarter rather than replace which I reckon is realistic but a best case scenario.

On a side note, track day on winters? Really....

You’ll not know until a full strip down / inspection is carried out. Lower wishbones, wheel, bodywork, bearings, damper and if unlucky damage to the near side driveshaft and even the diff. If the latter then be prepared for a large bill.

That qtr panel is very questionable a high end shop will probably want to replace as the body line where the bumper meets is very difficult.

It's going to be 5 thousand pounds for sure. Just the suspension components will be quite expensive.

Not sure about in the UK but in the US I would NEVER use a dealer sublet shop.

Also insist that they give you the before and after alignment sheet for when they align the vehicle after suspension work to make sure it comes out perfect. Post it up here if need be and one of us will review it.

Normal street insurance does not cover track damages unless you buy the additional coverage. At least on my Canadian policy all track damage is specifically listed as not covered and would be fraud if you tried to claim it as a street accident. My local autocross club also has us sign off that any damage sustained during events will not be attempted to be claimed on your personal insurance coverage.
That’s why there’s track insurance offered.

Track insurance has 10% deductible (as a value of the car) so if the car value is say $50k, 1st 5k is on him. So probably most of the cost of repair. Track insurance is more for catastrophic accident like a complete total where you would only be out 5-6k depending on your car.

Edit: I should say this is how it was explained to me.

Well, it is nearly winter now, isn't it? Heck, we had light snow flurries this morning, and more expected this weekend. And some of these new M&S tires really do perform well. Track (or even summer) rubber does not perform well in the cold. I'm not defending his choice, I'm just trying to suggest alternative facts.

OP, best of luck to you.

I'm pretty sure you could get some street summer tires into their operating temperature range within a lap

Cheers for the offer mate, but I was incredibly lucky and the only structural damage was a bent torsion bar, which only cost £200 to replace. The wheel wasn't damaged and I'm having a wheel tracking check carried out tomorrow.

All told its only cost me about £400, so I've been very lucky.[IMG][/IMG]

Very lucky. Let us know how things work out with the body. I had a rear quarter damaged on a E90 3 series, they cut the quarter off at the seam in the roofline and replaced the entire section. I suspect that is the only right way to do that repair. I checked my files and it turns out I passed on the documentation to the new buyer of that car so I can't help you with the hours of labor or cost. I do remember talking with the shop manager about that portion of the job (a BMW Collision Center) he said it was a common repair and told me BMW requires they use a set of jigs to ensure the car meets factory specs so you might want to check with a BMW Collision Center to get the work done.

Glad to hear it wasn't major damage. Could you share what you were doing prior to impact?

I totally agree. Don't go to a regular body shop. Go to a BMW Collision center and don't assume that your BMW dealer is associated with a BMWCC.
