Did Bimmerlink Battery Registration Brick my ECU?
So I replaced the battery in my OG M2 yesterday. Same specs as the OEM one from BMW so just needed to register it in Bimmerlink. Did the registration successfully with no errors or issues. Turned the car off. Went to go for a drive today and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree with error codes. Bimmerlink says there are errors in basically every single module and can't clear them. The car will start and drive but half the buttons don't work, headlights won't turn on, rev match disabled, etc. I have no backups to restore from since I wasn't doing any actual coding in Bimmercode/etc. Have coded cars before with Bimmerlink/Bimmercode and never had any issues like this.
Am I SOL and need to take it to the dealer for a full reflash? I don't have my E-SYS laptop anymore but can probably rig up and old desktop in the garage if needed.

Dumb question, but it does need to be asked; Have you checked the terminals on the battery to make sure they are secure and not touching anything metal (body, brackets, etc)?

Yep, first thing I did was pop off the battery cables to see if it would reset anything but no dice. I'm going to recode all the ECUs with ESYS tonight.

This sounds grim. I would disconnect the battery for an extended period of time and then reconnect it (with fingers crossed and all). There are recommendations online suggesting 15 min. Why not. Maybe 30 min. Long enough for all connections to change state.
Mostly, this thought arises from seeing BMWs get unpredictable when batteries get low. This is sort of related. I had an X5 where the car alarm went off when the battery got low (and needed replacement). Impossible to shut off w/o actually disconnecting the battery. Charging the battery and starting over? All sorts of codes. Good luck! |

Did that work or are you in the fetal position crying the dark somewhere?

Battery may just be weak. VW's react just like this when the battery is discharged.
