I read somewhere that he quit drinking or cut back to stay healthy. Damn, you know he's getting old if he says that. lol

Damn. Sad news. Remember seeing the Stones play in 1999 and thinking "I better go see them now as this certainly is the last tour for these old legends."

have a question. not that knowledgeable about music.

why was Watts so regarded ?

I was particularly fond of the stones and think many of their songs are I guess really beautiful, but I tend to recall Richards guitar work but not Watts doing outlandish drum solos.

Was that the appeal, Watts kept everything tight without being obnoxious ?

From Gavin Edwards‘ N.Y. Times obit: “While some rock drummers chased after volume and bombast (and solos), Mr. Watts defined his playing with subtlety, swing and a solid groove.

“As the Stones guitarist Keith Richards said in his 2010 autobiography Life, ‘Charlie Watts has always been the bed that I lie on musically.'”

Put another way, it's not always what he did, but sometimes what he didn't.

Charlie was a drummer's drummer.

sort of like Ringo, who put down a solid foundation for the others

This is heart-breaking news, the Stones being my favourite band.

I knew this day would come eventually - as they start to die (Bobbie Keys was enough of a shock a few years ago) - I just wasn't ready for it to happen anytime soon.
Had tickets for them last year - covid happened and concert finally got cancelled last month.
Heard of them going on with a replacement drummer as Charlie was recovering from a medical procedure - that was last month, and I found it weird that they were going to do so but just chalked it down to contractual obligations that they couldn't get out of.

Now with this news... I'm just numb.
You grow up listening to a band, you just expect they'll be around forever (or you just don't want to accept that eventuality)

I saw them at Shea Stadium in the late 80s, I saw The Who the same year.

At one time, all 6 of the CDs in my CD player were The Stones.

The Stones had a very unique drummer / rest of band interaction playing. I remember one of either Keith Richards or Jagger saying that the rest of the band (guitars, bass) pulled on the drummer. This gave them sort of a wobbly sound he said. If you listen to their live music, you can pick this up sometime.

If anyone is a Stones fan and has Sirius, what was Deep Tracks is now Rolling Stones Radio. I'm not sure if this is temporary in memory of Charlie or will be a thing.

Wanted to add: there's a Beatles channel on Sirius so there's no fricken way we shouldn't have a Stones channel.
