I’d do port install no doubt. Wondering if that is why windscreens are mandatory, to simplify the process. Easier and quicker to install fresh windscreens. If your local shop is careful, they should be able reuse windscreens.

BMW could have made the roof a factory option at a significant up-charge ($2x current price?) and still had a higher take rate then selling at MSRP and forcing dealer install. Plus, BMW could pocket the material costs for the old roof. It's almost like they're trying to discourage M2 owners from doing this.

yes.. no idea what that labor rate is.. if it's service department labor rates.. then one may be better off finding a body shop as the body shop rates should be significantly less than the service dept... by about 40-50%.

The roof part is a very weird decision by BMW...that would be so an easy factory upgrade.
Talked to two dealers...none of them will offer this...not only because of work but the potential discussions (and more work) this can bring later with the customer if there are some issues after installment... Looks really like BMW wanted to show that they can offer serious aftermarket parts but does it that complicated to hold you off from actually installing them...likely in 2 years you will see all those as options on order for the next M2 |

Port install has always been no cost. You usually pay msrp for parts, but some have been able to negotiate discounts on Mperf parts into their car deal.

the E36 M3 LTW for the US market came with the rear wing and front splitter and some other items in the trunk... they were not allowed to be installed on the car as they were not federalized. My personal opinion with the M2 comp performance parts catalog is that BMW is selling the M performance parts as " aftermarket parts " in order to amortize the parts expense over as many units as possible.. Let's say they make 5000 of every part in the initial production run... and likely there will be a new model that undergoes federalization and is the entire full meal deal of parts installed at the factory . If the special model has a limited run of say.. 1000 cars... then that means that they have 1000 of the original 5000 parts run committed for... The cost per part to produce 5000 parts will be cheaper per part than making 1000 parts for the special model alone, allowing the special model to have a slightly lower cost associated with producing it. Speaking of what you mentioned @Daaan ...I was at a track event and a local dealer declined to do a track ALIGNMENT for a customer. No parts needed at all... just a request to set the car up with particular alignment specs... Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 06-06-2018 at 05:34 PM.. |

Not really. It would mean changes to their entire production line. Decision doesn’t bode well for individuals thinking a carbon roof is coming from factory on a possible CSL. They obviously had second thoughts about something and just decided to offer it in parts department.

Well if you're ordering a new M2C have it done at port with full warranty at least. That way you can make them do it like three or four times to fix all the problems! Really make BMW sorry.

Clearly then if this a new car purchase.. Port install is best.. For people with an OG M2 ... or an M2 comp after purchase.. ... go to a (dealer or an independent ) body shop, not the service department. |

Still struck by all the trepidation of the roof install itself. I'd do it to my car if someone else was paying for it. Relax your car will be fine.
About that price though...
