2016 M2 Carplay upgrade

I just bought a 2016 M2 (Stoked to say the least), and was wondering if there was any options out there to upgrade the iDrive software to iDrive 6 and get Carplay in the car.

Thanks!

Hey kubax86

Is there any way to have CarPlay work via USB? I’m mostly thinking about lossless audio passthru quality since the Bluetooth/Wifi connection doesn’t sound as good as USB hardwire.

CarPlay sounds as good as USB.
CarPlay through USB is not possible

It doesn't sound as good. It kills me that people upgrade their stereos in their M2 and still use CarPlay wireless to play audio. Guess they can't hear the difference.

Thanks tho.

The audio quality is the same according to CarPlay dev documentation. 16bit 48khz is the max from both wired and wireless CarPlay. That is lossless cd quality. You need a special head unit to get 24bit audio capabilities, which CarPlay doesn't support either way.

If you're hearing clear sound degradation over wireless it's an issue with the head unit.

Play a lossless track back to back bn the wireless CarPlay in our cars and wired USB. You’ll hear a quality difference.

I suspect it’s bc we have Gen 1 like CarPlay in our OG M2’s and BMW uses a hybrid Bluetooth/WiFi setup for Carplay. There’s definitely some limitations in the implementation of CarPlay in our vehicles vs whatever the standard is now.

CarPlay standards have not changed. Bluetooth is only used to establish the wifi connection. All data goes through wifi. It's possible BMW is using 2.4ghz which may cause downsampling, or likely other factors causing the phone to downsample.

I'm not saying there isn't a difference during actual execution, but the setup has the capability to stream the same audio quality regardless of usb or wifi. Likely iOS downgrading it for whatever reason.

Yeah, I still think it's somehow BMWs CarPlay implementation for our cars, but I have no idea. I'd be curious to hear if there's a difference on newer BMWs/other CarPlay vehicles, but there's definitely a difference on my 2017 M2.

That said, I don't listen to music in my M2 nearly as much as I used to post-Stg 2+ mods, map, turbo, downpipe, and Akrapovic exhaust. So, maybe the CarPlay convenience will win me back over.

My only other gripe is having to switch back to iDrive to read my TPMS....

Hi kubax86 - would appreciate details here as well. I see the “F8X ultimate pack” on your site…guessing that is the best way to upgrade both to carplay and the steering/diff? Has anyone preferred stock diff/trans/steering/etc, or is it best just to go for all of the updates at once?

Do it all together. Major upgrade for OG and M2C alike.

Yes sir!
Pack contains iDrive 6 Flash and CS enhancements.
Really make the car drive like a M2CS

Got the F8X ultimate pack done with Kubax on my 2016 last week. Carplay and updated software is as advertised - makes it feel new with no issues so far. Haven't driven enough to comment on the CS steering/DCT/diff yet. In any case, Kubax makes the process easy!
