I was all set to put deposits down on an M2 several months ago, but I turned in my 135 lease and bought another 135, which I am beginning to tastefully mod and I think I am going to keep until the wheels fall off.

So what will keep me from an M2?

My love of the 135.

The mustang looks sick, especially the front end. I'll definitely test drive it, but I'm still leaning toward the M2. If BMW screws up or Ford absolutely kills it, who knows, maybe i'll be a mustang guy hah. The problem is everyone and their aunts have mustangs

Definitely. The 350/R should debut pretty much at the exact same time as the M2, towards the end of the year. Both cars are 1 and 1A on my do-want list.

And the exhaust note is insane even in the online videos... I bet it sounds even better in person.

Yeah, I agree. But at least this is definitely noticeable as something special at first sight.

However unfortunately it's size makes it seem kind of like a big boat. A really really really sexy boat.

Adem - here we go again with the Ford shark

If I started a "what would not keep you from getting an M2" thread, the Mustang would make the top choice.

Is there any information about the production run lenght?

I'm going into a 3 year lease with an M3 in the summer and was thinking this could be the car to get after. With my luck, they'll cease production a month before my lease ends.

Me buying the M235i... Don't think anything the M2 do will get me into one...

I'm not one to jump from the same generation of car to a high model, just illogical to me... (eg. Mk6 golf gti to mk6 golf R or Audi A3 to S3)

Unless my car gets written off or stolen, as I find it illogical to take a massive hit on a same model car just for that little extra power and goodies.

There are so many cars out there, even if I'm on a lease I'd go try something else instead.

I never thought I would say this but the GT350 actually has my attention. Still leaning M2 of course but this is worth investigating (while we wait for more M2 news anyway). Any idea on the weight?

Then ... could it ever have that connected-to-the-road/refined-chassis feeling of a lighter weight M car?

Good luck finding one to test drive. The dealer allocations are all being snapped up before the pricing is even announced - even knowing that there's probably going to be additional dealer markup. Some of these guys are putting down NON-REFUNDABLE deposits.

Well, if that's the case then count me out. 1. I will not buy a car without driving it (haven't driven a mustang since I tried out my buddy's 04 cobra long ago) 2. It seems like there is a movement with American performance cars where dealers are inflating the price insensibly. I will not pay a heavy premium on the car. So if Ford wants to penetrate the german performance market, they'll have to have introduce incentives, not road blocks.

I was going to drive a new GT V8 and see if I liked it - the boss 350 will probably be much better. I did the same thing when the Boss 302 came out .

I'd pay a small dealer markup for the right car - probably not a Mustang though. We had BMW dealers raping people for their i8's - one sold for 180k right down the road from me - that was a $50k markup - so it's not exclusive to American cars by any means.

Ford is not trying to take Porsche, Mercedes or BMW performance customers away with the Shelby line, they have a huge fan-base that's ready to jump on the GT350 and GT500.

While I agree that Ford has a strong fan base with the mustang, I think it would be ignorant to think they are not trying to gain market share from BMW, Merc, ect. Every one of these companies has a financial and marketing department with the sole purpose of increasing sales. Considering the GT350 will fall in the price range of a saturated portion of the performance car market, they have to make strides to gain market share. If not, potential buyers like myself will not even consider a mustang. All of this is a little preemptive though without knowing the exact price (rumored around $53k) and production numbers of the GT350.

Would you consider a regular GT mustang? I wouldn't, but I would consider a 235i or 435i any day of the week. Profit and market share on the scale of a global auto manufacturer isn't really affected by a few thousand performance cars one way or the other, it's the main stream models that make the difference.

For me personally, a 235i may interest me, not so much a 435i though. I would much rather get a used M3/M4 than a brand new X/Y35i. I agree, and its a shame the performance/ enthusiast market is not the focus of these companies. It all ties back to buying a BMW just because it's a BMW. BMW knows they have credibility to attract buyers to their base models, but for many of us that is not enough. That is why companies that stick to their roots, such as porsche, are so intriguing, but buying new takes quite a hit to the bank.

I test drove the new Mustang 6th Gen for the first time twice and was not impressed with the interior, stereo, manual tranny and fit and finish. The worst thing was I shopped used GT's and found a used, year old Gen 5 loaded with 1500 miles for $27,000 and I couldn't lay down almost 40G's for a year newer because the body style and rear end changed. Also I always hear how the front end looks like the fusion.

Uh, if Ford targeted the e92 M3's handling and stats for the standard V8 mustang, then I think that yes they are trying to take customers, particularly BMW customers. Porsche is on another level. The GT3/RS and possible GT2/RS might possibly be a competitor for the 400k Ford GT.
