Next Gen M2...? ETA? Car plan?

Sounds like the party split into two with the release of the S55 M2. Seems like one of the reasons was EU emissions. I am very intrigued how the next generation 2 series (and eventual M2) will pan out after feedback from this gen. It seems like across various articles BMW is quite surprised on how the M2s demand is so high. This gen came out in 2013 and the M2 started In 2016.

I generally keep my cars every 6-7 years. ('03 350Z to a '07 RS4 (bought used) to an '17 M2)

And I plan on highly considering a MX-5 and the upcoming 2019 release for 2020 Subaru STI for a winter ride.

2023 doesn't seem so far away ;0)

I will probably stick with me 2018 M2 and move onto the next gen M2 mid cycle (i.e when everything decent comes out). Currently my stable of cars will be more than enough to hold me out until then.

I just hope they give it proper treatment during the next gen. Good seats, tuneable engine, small and compact. One thing I hope they add is EDC control, that way I can use Bilstein aftermarket Coilovers with them to be able to do daily and track duty to an even greater degree.

You can buy KW DDC ECU c/overs for current m2 now for app controlled EDC-esque damper control....

Would rather have it be intergrated rather than having to work with aftermarket buttons

I've got a feeling they'll be more prepared and organised for the next m2. they've tested the waters and know the compact Ms are a huge success

nuances like mirrors and seats i assume will be there from the start. After offering it on the comp, they can't really take it back without huge backlash i think..

I thought this after the 1M.

Then I realized there is a ///Marketing strategy to sell M3 and M4 more than M2 by keeping the production volume of M2 low.

That, or I am completely wrong , and BMW is too dumb to recognize the potential market they have for selling 2 series coupes and sedans.

Agreed on the 1M front...but it seems as though they're going to be really careful in this segment - to ensure, I am guessing, that they don't commit more time and resources to a relatively low money maker.

My guess is that the future gens of the M2 will continue to get the Cayman treatment - aka, hand-me down materials from the 911 (or M3 in BMW's case) and never quite have the same level of R&D put into it. It will likely be a great car regardless (like the Cayman) because of the overall smaller size, shorter wheelbase, and lower price point.

It will be interesting to see if that's how it plays out.

I think BMW finally remembered how to make a M car and that's why the 1M and M2 are so popular.

I liked BMW in the past is b/c there were so few options and the M2 brought that back. Configuring a M3/M4 with options that I "think" I need/want and watching the price climb is ridiculous.

I'm really hoping they don't copy the M3/M4 selling model with adaptive suspension, etc. If you want a be everything to everyone car that can haul the family and friends around buy a M3/M4/M5.

Keep the M2 simple, great suspension, great turn-in, etc. The only option I would really like to see are some manual heated seats. And BMW if your listening stop messing w/the frick'n kidney grills, even Bangle didn't screw them up.

I think the M1 and M2 have been popular simply because the M3/M4 like most mid size cars are now far too large for a car with sporty aspirations as the sheer size puts them in grand touring category. The M1 and M2 are closer to E36 M3 size. That said the M2 is still way too heavy for it's size as I believe BMW needs to put the next M2 on a bit of a diet and invest in reducing weight.

Is the number of cars sold a true metric of a great car?

I cannot remember the last time I have heard so much positive praise for a BMW or any car brand...and the negatives have been fluff not performance related...mirrors, seats, angled seats, stiff suspension (subjective), etc

I also will not be too surprised to see the N55 M2 posting better track lap times than the new M2C. B/c those times will be made in the turns not the straights and as we have seen with the M2notC most test track don't have long enough straights to allow HP to overcome losses in the turns.

1M whatever. I’m not a big enough BMW fan to care about the semantics as everyone knows what I was referring to.

The upcoming mx-5 "LCI" is going to have an engine upgrade. I might actually trade the m2 for that. Thinking long term, mx-5 is going to be loads cheaper on the track. I've also become numb to this hp war manufactures are having. In normal so cal traffic, anything over what a corolla makes is just wasteful. Also I don't care what other people think about me not having a "luxury brand" or driving a Miata.

IMO it's the latter. The fact that they were surprised at the demand for a small M car boggles the mind. Serious question: Are they living under a rock? Everyone was practically begging for a small M car, so they make one to "test the water" and are shocked at the demand? Idiots.

Just simple and much lighter next gen G87? Please please please and 6MT as standard.

One thing is for sure the competition will be even more fierce so everyone must step up their game.

PS who's taking bets on timing if the first 'deposit placed' thread :

Why do we keep calling it a small car? The E30M3 and E36M3 were about the same size. That's what we want an M car before the stretched the 3 series into a a 5 series w/o the width.

Because it's all relative?

Maybe. Who knows. They might throw a b58 in it with no mirrors no seats because it worked last time, with the intention of putting the s58 in the comp model then cancel when suckers don't bite on the b58 version next time.
