And in an age where the teen's do not even care to drive, my son is learning manual and loves it!

Few luxury automakers bother to cater to enthusiasts in 2024 by giving them the option to opt for three pedals instead of two. BMW is one of the exceptions by selling the M2, M3, and M4 with a stick shift, which is also coming to the Z4 M40i roadster this year. Although a company spokesperson recently said there’s enough demand to keep the three-pedal setup alive, its days are ultimately numbered.
In an interview with Italian magazine Quattroruote, BMW Member of the Board of Management Frank Weber suggested the future is looking grim for the do-it-yourself gearbox. The inevitable demise of the manual is mainly attributed to a decrease in the popularity of the once-prevalent 6MT:
There’s more to the story than just the fact more and more people prefer the automatic to the detriment of a manual. Because advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are getting more sophisticated, these newer systems are primarily engineered to work with cars that have automatic transmissions.

Weird, Never thought of this as a noise issue.
I did think this was an emissions issue. Sucking the fun out of driving with every new regulation.

The transmission itself might be basic, but building a manual-transmission car is extremely complex. And I’m not just talking about making the business case for a niche option sold only to true believers (in America, at least). Frankly, plugging a manual transmission into a modern car requires some weird engineering.
Drive-by noise regulations affect gear-ratio selection, for example. As a hypothetical, if a car has to be below a certain noise threshold at 35 mph, you can simply program the car to use a higher gear. In a manual car, you obviously can’t.
"The ECU is in the driver’s seat," says Michael Rosler, head of Porsche’s 911 product line.
So you’ve got to pick gear ratios that keep the engine at lower rpm for a given speed to satisfy those noise requirements.
Noise emissions are a problem, as are particle emissions. An SAE paper published last year by researchers at France’s Nantes University and Renault notes that in manual transmission cars, driver behavior has a huge effect on emissions performance.

I had a 911 for 10 years w a stick. I sold it when it started to break down thinking I would be ok without a stick. That lasted 2 years and I ended up with a C7 Z06 the last year of the vette stick. An M7 with a supercharged V8 is divine….

All you need is a proper muffler. Not too much though, as some noise especially on high revs adds to safety. By the way, don't ATs have a semi-automatic mode that allows to rev?
