100% disagree. The Giulia QV actually looks good. It's a style that works.

And since you bring the Giulia up, I really hope with how ugly the new M3/M4 is pushes more people to buy the Giulia QV, so hopefully we see it continue on.

Doubtful.

But if you think that’s a hint that van Hooydonk and head of BMW design Domagoj Dukec are about to change their ways, think again. The kidney grille is here to stay.
The reasoning is simple: van Hooydonk and Dukec want BMW to stand out, so they’re happy to make it the distinguishing feature. They rationalise it by pointing out that it’s part of BMW’s past, so it will remain part of the future.
[...]
Van Hooydonk acknowledges that none of this has been easy for the aficionados. “If you have fans, it’s fantastic. You have people who don’t just buy your products, they love what you do. For them, it’s an emotional thing. Of course, if they love what you do, the minute you’re going to change it, they might have an issue with that. It comes with the territory,” he says. “Our job isn’t so easy. We have to debate how much change would be enough because we’re living in a world where there are constant new players coming in. If we don’t move, we become a sitting duck for all our competitors. [The balance is] to move enough so that the company thrives but not move so much that you lose contact with your fan base altogether."
Suggestion: let them give Porsche a ring to ask why the 996 headlights design (aka 'fried egg' design) was not used again on subsequent 911 iterations (997, 991 and 992).

I noticed this too, wondering if the seals will soften.

I hold the E39 in very high regard! You actually confirmed my suspicion the the G80 3 series has indeed grown to an older 5 series.

Great info, thanks!

When I look out the front of the house from upstairs I'm struck by the fact that the M2CS and 540i don't look significantly different in size. It's just possible to discern that the E39 is longer. The biggest visual differences are the wheels (my aftermarket BBS RS-GT 18" wheels visually look much smaller than the 763M's) and, of course, the 4 vs. 2 doors (but the E39 doors are much smaller). And the CS is prettier :-)

The E39 M5 is actually another 300 lbs heavier than the 540i (200 lbs more than the G80 M3) - surprised it's that much more. But yes, the G80 is right there in good company. When I bought the 540i 6-speed in 2004 it felt so heavy (a better word is "solid"), coming from my other two fivers (E28 535i and E39 528iT 5-speed).

Drove a Maserati Ghibli recently, which was fun but after getting back in the E39 it felt so incredibly light on its feet and responsive in comparison. Felt great to be back in my 19-year old car

Not to turn this into a geo-political discussion, but if they don't achieve their goal of world domination via a true hostile takeover, BMW should at least be vigilant and terrorized by the fact they could be bought out by them.

Which reminds me of a worthless limerick that stuck with me for some stupid reason all these years that might be related to this.

There was a young lady from Niger
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger.
They came back from the ride
With the lady inside
And the smile on the face of the tiger.

And to turn this back to the automotive side of things, here's a car poem that obviously was written before seat belt laws.

Ruth rode in my new convertible
In the seat beside me.
I took a bump at sixty five
And rode on Ruthlessly.

Who says you can't find good literature on car chat boards anymore?

I saw the new M4 today, finally - been wanting to see the grills in person. It is marginally better in person but ONLY because you can feel the proportions of the car more in person, so it is more proportional and less ridiculous looking, but here's the down side.

The car is really huge. Like, it dwarfs my m2 CS (it should) but even made my f80 m3 feel/look small. The hood feels like it never ends and it's so wide, you can't tell me the m3 / m4 is not 100% a GT car now.

I thought I'd feel a little buyers remorse with all the fancy tech and the new platform but I'm more than satisified with my decision, god that car was big!

I had the same feelings when I pulled up next to it. Sitting in the M4 I was instantly reminded of sitting in a Z06 and Merc GT - I feel the M4 hood length is in that realm.

The fancy tech is nice, but that's the last reason I buy M cars; it's the special feeling I get when driving or looking at them. Safe to say I did not get those feelings when looking or sitting behind the wheel of the new M3 & M4

Just more proof that the M2 is the new M3, because even the M4 doesn't look like a BMW.

M2 desperately needs a HUD. I could care less about all the other tech aside from CarPlay. That said a HUD is a game changer.

I spy a HUD! If they can nail the design and not follow the G80/2 design language, that car is going to be incredible.

The G87 M2 will feature fenders à la E82 1M.

The M8 is whatever
The M5 is the new M7
The M3 is the new M5
The (next) M2 is the new M4.....

M2 will be bigger than what we all have today, inevitable.

I just wish they would give us a 4 door off the 2er rear drive platform so we can have an M3 again....

Sigh.....

I don't get that, in my visual field I only want to see the road. IMO a hud is an uneccessary distraction... Ok I'm probably old school .

Ooh-La-La!

F87 design is handsome culminating in the CS. But in my opinion the entry level M needs to be bold and a bit provocative, with a touch of naughty-naughty.

E30 M3 and E82 1 M are prime examples.

And if the goal is to get a younger audience hooked on the product, then give them something to talk about at the company water cooler or barista counter.

Leave staid and conservative for the M3/M4 crowd.

I really liked the HUD in the F80 and the one in our G02. It was the one thing I missed moving to the F87.

Solution: I turned on the digital Speedo in the F87 CS main instrument cluster and I no longer miss it.

Whole point of a HUD is that you never need to take your eye off the road. It definitely takes a little while getting used to, but once you do it's hard to go back.

Designed in Europe where tires are no longer allowed to leave the wheel arch. Would have been a better option for the CS instead of those ugly extensions above the wheels.

But it's hard to do well. Several manufacturers tried it in the 80's and caused a LOT of accidents, which is why it's absent from most vehicles to this day.

I like the HUD, even the bad 80's ones (I'm a bit of a techie), but for a lot of people it's a distraction no matter how well its done. It should, IMO, be an available option on most cars, like on a tech package or such, but from what I've read it's too expensive to on/off engineer.

While getting my M2 serviced they gave me an M340 IIRC, and I HATED the new display, but really liked the HUD.

HUD is good unless you wear polarized sunglasses like myself during the day... which make it useless.
