The only thing very obvious is that you must be a top tier pro driver to determine that 'this guy can't drive'. We know what Sutcliff's racing credentials are, what are yours? Who are you?

I like Sutcliffe.

He has great enthusiasm reviewing and comparing cars, similar to Harris...

The point of this comparo isnt so much to compare the two cars, but rather to praise both cars with a mention on how great the SUV is to be so close in performance with a sporty small coupe...

At least That's what i read between the lines

+1, just like I like Bovingdon and Meaden. Their all the better carjourno/drivers.

Steve stated a couple of times this is a weird comparison.
And @ 2:20 he just comes over the finish line which apparently is just before a slow lefthander so he had to slow down/shift back anyway. And if not we have the editor to blame lol.

With an M2 with DCT it definitely would be >1.5s gap.

Disclaimer:Any Porsche is super underrated, even more than BMWs are.

Steve in the 1M(on wintersetup, way easier to get the backend out in a controlled way,but still great footage from 1:54 onward)

Cheers
Robin

It's a Porsche it will cost more as its more luxury, however that said reliability... is questionable.

I think that an M3 (as the practical car) and Cayman GT4 (as the sports / fun / track toy) is a better combo but also a little more expensive.

Add the DCT track friendly tranny instead of 6-speed manual and the gap would increase. Moral of the story, if you want to go tackle a track do not be stupid and buy an overly expensive, more powerful, bulky, and 4wd SUV. Because at the end of the day a less powerful, lighter, cheaper, nimbler, and simpler RWD sports coupe will show taillights to it. Also, half a second is a lot on a short circuit over couple of racing laps that becomes a significant difference.

I drove the Porsche...

Ordered a 2017 GLA45 instead.

The GLA45 is a master of wizardry!

I bought a Macan GTS this week. Quite happy with it but the bad part is I can't come around a corner, smash the gas and watch the white smoke in my rear view mirror for a half a mile like I could in an M3,M2 or a Cayman S.

Steve Sutcliffe's M2 time is actually quick. He did 00:46.1, quicker than M2 DCT 00:46.7 tested on the same track against the Focus RS.

Yeah but the added benefit of the room in the Macan would be nice to have. I'm ignoring, for the sake of this discussion, that within 10 miles of me I have access to a Cayenne, SQ5, 328 Sport wagon with Dinan Stage 1, and a 330CI. Then in my garage currently there's a 235 and a 328D. So I have pretty much all the bases covered for whatever I could possibly need a car for. Was just ignoring all that thinking if it was only in my garage (not cars I've gotten dad or could borrow from brother) Macan and M2 would be a great combo.

Porsche ranks as one of the top, if not the top, in quality and reliability.

I have a 991S and Macan (had a cayenne until recently) and have found them to be both very reliable. The Macan is more fun than any sports sedan I've driven recently, and quite impressive a 4400 lbs Macan turbo can do on a track given it wasn't meant to be a track car like the M2. Now take a new 718 and that changes a lot.

That's because the M2 manual is actually faster than the M2 DCT around a track !

Wait what ?

This isn't the first time an M2 DCT has been bested by a manual gearbox. It's happened with a comparison to a 1M also.

Could it be that a HUMAN selecting gears around the track is better than a computer ??

Why did you get rid of the Macan? I have a deposit on a Macan GTS, but would need to get rid of the M3 and I'm starting to have doubts and may be asking for my deposit back.
If u like m3 u will not like Macan. Though u selling it so I guess you might.
Anyway, Macan is a great suv like car but it is not as sporty as m3. Is is more comfortable though but a bit smaller inside.
p.s. I was in the same boat as u before purchasing m3. I tested all plausible alternatives and m3 won hands down for what I wanted which was a sporty car with some lux.

You won't miss the m3 at all. Macan is IMO more fun to drive. It has better steering feel, the throttle response is incredible, and the engine and exhaust note are actually pleasing and sound downright good. Plus you don't have traction issues and can really plant your foot down and have fun.
It's like having a practical Cayman S.

I concur. These "this vs. that" are pointless. It is not even the same class.
